The ObamaTail's newest fan just might be the man it is named after.
President Barack Obama shocked workers and patrons of the ByWard Market yesterday afternoon by jumping out of his motorcade for an unscheduled stop in the Ottawa landmark to "buy Canadian" for his daughters.
Among his selections were some Maple Leaf shortbread cookies from Le Moulin de Provence, a keychain with a moose on it, and an example of Ottawa's legendary BeaverTail pastry -- this one named in his honour.
When Mr. Obama got out of his armoured Cadillac just before 4 p.m. he was handed a crispy, hot BeaverTail that was boxed and ready for take out. To get the ObamaTail into his hands took some reconnaissance work by his secret service agents and quick cooking by the young women working at BeaverTails.
She and her co-workers whipped up the pastry, and then added a chocolate-and-maple syrup "O."
This version of the BeaverTail was created in honour of Mr. Obama's inauguration on Jan. 20 and served to 1,000 guests at the Canadian Embassy in Washington that day.
Someone figured the president had to try one.
However, Secret Service agents told the BeaverTails employees they would have to deliver the pastry to Mr. Obama, whose motorcade was stopping on the west side of the ByWard Market building. BeaverTails is located at the corner of William and George streets.
There were three employees working. Who would get to deliver it?
"Everyone knows I am the hugest Obama fan," says 17-year-old Jessica Milien, a Grade 12 student at Immaculata High School. "So they picked me. I still can't believe it."
Ms. Milien followed the agent around the corner to the ByWard Market building. Mr. Obama walked up and introduced himself.
He asked how her day was going. She handed him the BeaverTail and he asked what was on it, so she explained the concoction and what made it special.
"He said he could hardly wait to eat it," says Ms. Milien, who figured he probably ate it later in his armoured car. After serving Mr. Obama, Ms. Milien called her mother. "But she was too asleep to really understand what was going on."
After getting out of his car, Mr. Obama entered the Market building to look for Canadian-made gifts. He stopped at OXXO Silk and Gift and bought a keychain from a very surprised Adnan Ustun.
The president bought the keychain with Canadian currency and told Mr. Ustun it was for his daughter. He didn't specify which one. He was also looking for a snow globe. He said he was continuing a tradition, started during the campaign, of picking up souvenirs at every stop.
Mr. Ustun wasn't even supposed to be working. "It was my wife's day to work, but we switched shifts because I had to go to the doctor (on Wednesday). I already phoned her to tell her what happened. She couldn't believe it."
The store manager put the $5 bill from Mr. Obama in a plastic envelope and spent the rest of his working day showing it to anyone who walked by.
Mr. Obama also stopped at the Moulin de Provence bakery to pick up treats.
"He was looking for some cookies for his daughters. He asked for any particular cookies that we have that show another view of Canada," manager Ailicec Gonzalez said. "We said yes of course, this is the right place for that. We showed him the Canadian flag cookies that we have, and he took three."
Cookies, keychain and ObamaTail in hand, Mr. Obama left for the airport.

Obama, the most health conscious President in history, eating a beaver tail? All that deep fried pastry and sugar?
No, no, surely a miracle of transubstantiation, turning such junk food into nourishing manna.
