ABC News: Living Near Fast Food Ups Stroke Risk

People living in neighborhoods where fast food restaurants are plentiful appear to have a higher risk of stroke than those living where such restaurants are scarce, a new study says.

Fast food consumption has previously been linked to higher rates of heart disease and organ damage. In this latest study tying fast food restaurants to cardiovascular ills, researchers studying neighborhoods in one Texas county found that people living in regions with 33 fast food restaurants or more had 13 percent greater odds of stroke than those living in neighborhoods with the fewest fast-food joints.

The study also showed that each additional fast food restaurant in the neighborhood increased the chance of stroke by 1 percent. The results of the research were presented at the International Stroke Conference in San Diego on Thursday. [snip]

But he cautioned that the findings are purely associative and do not necessarily point to a direct link between the restaurants' offerings and potentially deadly stroke.

"I can't tell you that anybody who had a stroke in this study has ever had a burger in their lives," Morgenstern said. "But I can tell you that these neighborhoods on the whole have factors that increase the risk of stroke."

I guess that would mean poor people have a higher stroke risk than wealthy people. Since most fast food restaurants in middle and lower class neighborhoods.

Yep yep yep, always the victim, NEVER take responsiblity for healthy eating choices, blame the restuarants, a burger and fries here and there won’t kill anyone but a steady diet of that crap will, but, alas, why should people make smart choices when we can just blame someone else for the problem and eventually tax them out of business.

When I lived in Minneapolis, I treated myself to White Castle’s jalapeno cheeseburgers about once a month and Popeye’s spicy fried chicken every three months or so.

Just because it’s there doesn’t mean you have to eat it everyday. Some people have no common sense.

Yes. Please do not question the methodology or you may get a visit from Al Gore...

For goodness sake...I lived directly across from a Burger King for 4 years. I went there exactly ONE time. I don’t remember in any of those 4 years of being pulled in with a rope, or being forced to go there. I actually went in there ONE time and bought some ice cream because I had strep throat. Good grief!

Yes. I believe the authors are now being considered for high ranking positions within Obama's economic team.

Obama will remedy this complaint soon.

No one will be able to afford to eat anything but our devalued dollar bills.
