STAMFORD, Connecticut — Doctors say a Connecticut woman mauled by a 200-pound chimpanzee is making slight progress after more than seven hours of surgery by four teams of surgeons.

Dr. Kevin Miller of Stamford Hospital says 55-year-old Charla Nash suffered extensive facial and hand injuries when she was attacked Monday. He says stabilizing her condition took more than seven hours of surgery.

It’s being considered from other articles I’ve read.

Any animal that is that unpredictable and can inflict that amount of harm on a human being, has no business running free not in the wild.

Even if the owner faces the full consequences of what their pet does, these animals are so dangerous, that even penalizing the owner isn’t enough. It’s not like a dog bite, where people usually recover without too much problem. Having your hands, face, and genitals ripped off,... well, there’s not much an owner can do to recompense someone for that.

It’s confusing, but I think it’s supposed to mean that she hadn’t given it to him in the past, but she did that day. So, it’s not changing her story.

” Nash was attended by hand specialists, plastic surgeons and specialists in orthopedics, ophthalmology and trauma.”

I wonder if she still has eyes.
I saw part of a tv documentary last year about the growing phenomenon of childless women who adopt monkeys and chimps as babies.
The primates are forcibly taken from their own mothers , so there’s another layer of behavioral trauma in addition to their abnormal lifestyle.
In many cases, even with the little monkeys- as would be expected ,things eventually go terribly wrong-biting, destruction, etc.
There are sanctuaries full of these abandoned monkeys and chimps , many of whom are so damaged by then,
they have to be isolated from the other primates.
The women then feel very guilty
and regret believing they could substitute an infant primate for a human baby.

“is it just me, or are animals becoming bigger ashpoles all the time?”

They still have a long way to go to match politicians.

I passed a similar comment to my co-workers at coffee this morning, and they all thought I was perverted for thinking that. But I’m wondering the same thing.

Her daughter was killed in a car accident and her husband died, not sure how, but from what I have been reading, her chimp became her world and a substitution for the family she lost.

Not excusing her decision to keep a chimp, or the poor and IMO dangerous, decision of the city to grandfather that animal into the animal ban, but I think she’s clearly not dealing with a full deck emotionally.

I’m sure she took very good care of him...

I once had a discussion with my hair dresser where I told her that I was getting my new kittens spayed and neutered. She asked me "Why are you doing that?"

Sounds like someone who should be on Obama's financial planning committee.

Mike Rowe did a "Dirty Jobs" segment in a monkey sanctuary ... little monkeys, not great apes.

Nasty little varmints bit the camera crew, scratched people, shat all over everything ...

“I’ve been trying to avoid going down that road ... but the bits about giving the chimp wine and “snuggling” seem really creepy to me.”

Just because a person treats their pet as a surrogate child doesn’t mean anything perverse is going on. People snuggle with and sleep with their dogs and cats all the time and no one thinks it is especially strange. Until I hear evidence of beastiality I will give her the benefit of the doubt.

What I’ve gathered was that she hadn’t given it to him in the past, but she tried to that day.

That’s where the conflicting accounts seem to be coming in. Some places say that she says she only tried to give him the medicine, and other places say that she says she did give him the medicine.

I am glad this woman survived, but she’s got a long road to recovery. I hope she and her ‘friend’ have learned that it is not a good idea to keep wild animals as pets - especially when you try to treat them like children.

Most of the articles I see in the media are ones lamenting the “murder” of the chimp and “it’s the victim’s fault.”

That’s disgusting. They just don’t get it.

Wild animals are wild animals. No matter how much you anthropomorphize them, they’re going to act like wild animals.

The blame the victim mentality makes me sick.

I’d rather share a house with a tiger or a lion.

At least when you got tired of either of those, you could make a nice rug.
