Boxer: Budget stalemate could hurt Calif. stimulus
By JULIET WILLIAMS, Associated Press Writer
Wednesday, February 18, 2009
A monthslong partisan rift over how to solve California's $42 billion budget shortfall could jeopardize the state's piece of the federal economic stimulus package, U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer said Wednesday.
California is poised to receive more than $26 billion in economic-recovery funding, as well as billions more for future projects, according to figures compiled by U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein and state Assembly Speaker Karen Bass, both Democrats.
About $11 billion of that could immediately help the state close its budget shortfall if the state Legislature could agree to a midyear budget fix, said Jed Kolko, associate director of research for the Public Policy Institute of California.
A bipartisan package that legislative leaders negotiated with Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has been stalled for days in the state Senate, where it needs one more GOP vote to pass.

At some point they will just vote to do away with future votes and opposition. Its just too damn important to get people the bread and water they need. They cannot afford to let Republicans hold up their undoing of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
The way things are going right now, I don’t even want to
think what the United States would be like in 100 years. It
won’t be a United States, it will be Hell. Totally
unrecognizable as a civil, livable place.
The state ‘rats are calling out their big guns; now things are getting interesting.
Abel Maldonado is headed for bigger things...
FYI
Both Senate and Assembly now to convene at 10PM.
The Assy has been on hiatus for days now, so something might be up (or down)
There are some twitterers out there in the Capitol:

God forgive me, but I HATE THIS F***ING BITCH!
She has been my states Senator since 1993 and it’s embarassing she keeps getting elected. When she was in the House, she bounced over $200,000 in checks and got away with it! Still we keep electing her her, because she protects our abortion rights.
F*** this f***ing state!
I hope someone reads the guidelines in order to receive those billions before they take it.
Our mayor did and he refuses to take anything from the 'stimulus' package. He said there are so many strings attached to the money that it would actually cost the city more to hire people to adhere to the regulations and guidelines than it was worth.
The mayor also said the so-called stimulus wouldn't stimulate anything but more Federal regulations.
There may be more states and local governments saying NO THANK YOU once they actually read this mess!
Hopefully we won’t get one cent of the Kenyans stimulus and can force the state into bankruptcy!!!

Interesting and suspicious that the CalChannel has been down for most of these late night sessions www.calchannel.com #TCOT

Appears tweets during Twtr outage didn’t go thru. Both pro tem Steinberg & Speaker Bass told reporters it’ll be a long nite.

The open primary proposal, according to sources, would allow top 2 vote getters...regardless of party...to advance to Nov. election.

Senate Dems have gone back to caucus

As long as the backers can cobble together a group of legislators on each proposal, it works.

But, as has been pointed out to me, you don’t have to have the same people on each proposal.

This set of proposals is a multi dimensional political chess game. Remember, you need 27 votes in the Senate and 54 in the Asmbly

So why report it if not confirmed? Because every single source says these are the things under discussion at this hour. So let’s call it

But there’s been lots o’talk of a deal...based on the issues outlined by Sen. Maldonado (R). However...for now...there’s NO confirmation.

# John & Ken just issued a threat to recall one of the six new Freshman GOP Assembly members in the Southern CA area. #tcot about 8 hours ago from web

So that is the talk about a recall....
So Maldonado is gonna fold to get open primaries to get re-elected? Did I get this screwed up from the twitter stuff?
Can someone summarize. What is this open primary issue?
Nope. You got it right. Read from the bottom (later) up (most recent). That is what is predicted. There is a draft of the actual language already floating around the capitol (I posted a link a little while ago).
First, they have to convince all the Dems in the Assy to vote for Abel’s demand list. Both the Senate and Assy convened and immediately went into caucus.
I’d never used twitter before — kinda cool!
