Magic in the Mission (San Francisco rejects American Apparel store)
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | February 9, 2009 | Caille Millner

Posted on 02/17/2009 10:24:41 AM PST by reaganaut1

It is too easy to make fun of the people who packed Room 400 in San Francisco's City Hall to stop American Apparel from opening a store on Valencia Street in the Mission District last week.

They are not serious people. They live in a world where facts like 27 vacant storefronts on Valencia Street and 9.3 percent unemployment statewide and nearly 600,000 jobs lost nationally last month do not matter. The few who read books know no authors beyond Naomi Klein. [...]

What they want is magic.

The word "magic" kept recurring during the hours of public comment at the Planning Commission meeting where the American Apparel store's permit was up for a vote. "Valencia Street is a magical place," one speaker said. Another claimed that "Our neighborhood is a dream, a delicate flower." Others spoke of American Apparel as a "parasite" on their "ecosystem." Several local business owners testified that it was their "dream" to operate in such a "magical" place, and noted, with horror, that they might have to make alterations to their business plans if a new store opened in the area.

As it happens, American Apparel is somewhat of a magical company. The company makes its clothing in downtown Los Angeles, employing mostly Latino and Asian immigrants. It offers its workers health care. It pays more than twice the federal minimum wage.

This article is a good description of the liberal mindset. I am surprised it was published in the SF Chronicle.

Probably didn't like the “American” in the store name. Change it to “Cuban Apparel” and watch their attitudes change.

I’m out of comments for nonsense like this. SF needs to become its own country and take L.A. with ‘em.

So in an economic downturn, we have a city REFUSING to let business in?

*shakes head*...

San FascistSicko is an embarrassment to America.

Most American cities would have welcomed a retailer that actually MANUFACTURES in America!

SF part of that One World Liberal Globalist agenda...they probably did not like it that a company actually MANUFACTURES in America.

Most communities would appreciate the “magic” of an American Apparel store opening in their communities

American Apparel is a big time proponent of illegal immigration. Much, if not most of their workers are illegals.

It depends on your ultimate goal. communists see an economic downturn as an opportunity to further erode the freedom of business entrepreneurs.

The only question that remains for me is, do they do this knowingly or are they imbeciles? Or both...

Ahhh! The Mission. I remember learning colloquial Spanish there when I tried to figure out what the phrase “No urine aqui” that was painted on the sides of all the buildings there. It’s a toilet.

This article is a good description of the liberal mindset.

I just posted the article on facebook with a click of the mouse. I find the article here, go to the source of the link and presto! I have a SF Chronicle article to share with anyone who happens by my page. I keep the political slant under wraps. I just am subtly exposing that 40% in the mushy middle to another point of view.

San FascistSicko is an embarrassment to America.

You are preaching to the choir here. Start gently spreading the truth in the general public. A spoonful of sugar and all that....get in the social network and start enlightening people.
