A year ago, I wrote to Gordon Brown asking him to place a moratorium on new coal-fired power plants in Britain. ... The reason is this - coal is the single greatest threat to civilisation and all life on our planet.
The climate is nearing tipping points. Changes are beginning to appear and there is a potential for explosive changes, effects that would be irreversible, if we do not rapidly slow fossil-fuel emissions over the next few decades. ...
... How can people be expected to evaluate and filter out advice emanating from those pushing special interests? How can people distinguish between top-notch science and pseudo-science?
Those who lead us have no excuse - they are elected to guide, to protect the public and its best interests. ... If we do not change course, we'll hand our children a situation that is out of their control. One ecological collapse will lead to another, in amplifying feedbacks.
The amount of carbon dioxide in the air has already risen to a dangerous level. The pre-industrial carbon dioxide amount was 280 parts per million (ppm). Humans, by burning coal, oil and gas, have increased this to 385 ppm; it continues to grow by about 2 ppm per year.
The most threatening change, from my perspective, is extermination of species. ...
Clearly, if we burn all fossil fuels, we will destroy the planet we know. ...
Coal is not only the largest fossil fuel reservoir of carbon dioxide, it is the dirtiest fuel. ...
The trains carrying coal to power plants are death trains. Coal-fired power plants are factories of death. ... I estimated that in its lifetime [the proposed Kingsnorth power plant] would be responsible for the extermination of about 400 species ...

His use of hyperbole (comparing coal to death factories [run by the Nazi's]) is over the top. But for the uneducated, environmentalists and those politicans who believe in top-down control of our lives he makes a compelling case. Too bad [for him] more and more scientists are re-examining the basis for this facts and are drawing different conclusions or at least saying lets look harder at the science and not turn our lifestyle upside down based on what might be faulty or incomplete research.

Has NASA's Hansen Finally Lost His Mind? (BTW, half of the article's links are pdf links.)

If all of those who are so concerned about CO2 output (but not their own, of course) would just go crawl into a hole and die, co2 output would drop and the Earth would be saved!
At some point you just have to say, went around the bend on the coal train, didn’t we ...
People need to know how to recognize when others just go nuts, and help get them to professional help.
either coal or nuclear
wind and solar will never compete.
The coal fired plants should be converted to nuclear power.
Never in the history of history has so much stupidity been packed into so few words.
James Hansen is a moron. Close him.
This guy is an eye rolling CO2 emitter..
Tell you what. Let’s not ask the Astronomer James Hansen to render opinions on climatology just like we won’t ask a biologist to render opinions on seismology.
somebody needs to put a boot up his backside!
Hansen is channeling Jimmy Carter.

Ping me if you find one I've missed.
Coal is the single greatest energy resource in North America. We are to coal what Saudi Arabia is oil. This hysteria is meant to cripple America and western civilization. I for one say spend some of that porkulus bill on developing solid (coal) fuel automobiles to cut our dependence on foreign oil.
Finally those sickly survivors of the world wide pandemic will be toasted off by the sun expanding and wiping the slate of earth clean leaving it a blackened lump of coal like rock. Kinda of gives a warm feeling, doesn't it?
And you were worried about a little old power plant!
Bye and stay warm!
