Obama to appoint panel for auto recovery
By STEVEN R. HURST, Associated Press Writer Steven R. Hurst, Associated Press Writer 2 hrs 52 mins ago
WASHINGTON It will take more than one "car czar" to help get the embattled U.S. auto industry back on track, President Barack Obama has decided. Instead, his administration is establishing a presidential task force to direct the restructuring of General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC, a senior administration official said Sunday night.
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and National Economic Council Director Lawrence Summers will oversee the across-the-government panel, the official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because no announcement has been made.

Toyota must be popping champagne corks right about now.........
Will these people get paid? With tax dollars? The bloat in Obama’s admin is going to smother the U.S.
“...presidential task force to direct the restructuring of General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC.”

Does anyone else realize the enormity of that simple phrase?
The utter sea change in America and American business that this implies?
Can this guy do ANYTHING himself, or does he have to hand it all off to Pelosi or a panel?
Is he aware he is president, or does he think he’s Community Organizer in Chief?
I thought the auto bailout was suppoesd to have done that.
I just can’t put the word President in front of his name. I call him Community Organizer 44.
Fascism is halfway between socialism and communism, the government controls everything important. Like forcing the auto industry to build golf carts and then people have no choice what they buy.
It's what Kenya is and what Obama's Marxist pappy advocated.
Here is an excellent video that another freeper linked that explains the differences.
Listen to how he's made you contort yourself.
Why would the POTUS directing the restructuring himself be more desirable than a committee appointed by POTUS?
Time was when we instinctively recoiled at the thought of govt involved in any way with private business decisions.
There. Fixed that one, too :)
In the end 0bama may very well make the decisions himself. But until that time comes he is going to hire people to suck on the governmental tit and get fat!
The automobile production soviet council. Who gets to make the ZIO limosines (the exclusive vehicle for transportation of high government officials)? And will the HUMVEE be replaced with the GAZ 69A? Perhaps we may be permitted to purchase a Pobeda, if we get on the waiting list and are otherwise sufficiently conforming to the desired correct thinking. Or maybe a copy of an old East German Trabant.
Well I can't argue that!
Get your hands out of our lives and do just what the constitution allows you to do!
Auto design by government committee. Successful everywhere it's been tried.
My point, which I think was pretty obvious, is that this guy is always handing things off to panels. I assumed everyone could make the association with Soviet-style committees.
But some need a little more prodding--glad I could help! ;)
He is making government this Kafka-esque labyrinth in order to insulate himself from all responsibilities as well as further distance government actions from the people.
Were he a genuine liberal he would be pushing for more local control of government.
But he’s not. We forget that there is a difference between a liberal and a communist. I can’t stand either, but there IS a significant difference.
You're so focused on "soviet committees" and Obama's helplessness, that you missed the point that in a capitalist republic, neither the President nor his soviet committees have any business making business decisions in a private company.
It doesn't matter if Obama "can't do all this by himself." He shouldn't be doing any of it.
