You should fear it, my friend.
Maine was not always like this. It was once a solid Republican state. From the 1960’s onward Maine has been flooded with liberals, hippies, moonbats and radicals from all over the country. Many were from Massachusetts, New York, and New Jersey. They got involved with local government, school boards - everything.
Changed the whole damned state.

Folks Olympia Snowe is politically strong enough to be reelected but as a “moderate” SHE STANDS FOR NOTHING AND THIS IS HER WEAKNESS.

She stands for nothing and can be played like a violin IF we are smart enough to THINK.

FIRST WE MUST TAKE OVER ALL THE LOCAL PARTIES!

(short of a secret handshake) ALL PEOPLE WHO POST ON FREE REPUBLIC NEED TO INVADE THE LOCAL GOP PARTIES. (don’t think acorn and co have not thought of this)

note how the moderate or “what culture war?” posters here never say anything about where they are from or who they are on their homepage.

it’s uncanny

When’s she up for re-election?

RNC might do well to spend a few bucks on an ad campaign to seat a more Traditionally Conservative Constitution-defending Republican in her place.

I emailed her two or three times and told her she was a RINO and should just change parties because she was not Traditional, Conservative, or Constitution Defending.

"I truly fear what large numbers of Libs moving into my beloved Tennessee will do to our quality of life in the years to come.... "

If you want to see what relocated North Eastern Liberals can do to a state, one needs look no further than North Carolina. Mecklenburg County (Charlotte) has seen explosive growth due to NE transients the last 15 years. And as a result, North Carolina has moved well to the left.

Liberals (especially in retirement) move to escape the punishing, confiscatory tax laws, only to vote for people in their new domicile, who enact punishing, confiscatory tax laws. It makes no sense.

I have a friend in real estate in NC. He was showing a property to a couple from CA. The man wanted the small farm to grow vegetables to sell. He has never farmed before, by the way.
Anyway the man was asking questions about the extension agency and about the property in terms of farming. The wife wanted to know about the closest Trader Joes, Starbucks and Target. lol
Each are about 1 hour away. When they parted she was whining about this being nowhere and having nothing. My friend thought well that’s that. He was surprised when the guy called back and they bought the place.

"The sort of conservatism practiced in the South will not work in Ohio or many other Northern States..."

I agree completely. I was raised in NW Ohio, but left right after high school (my parents recently retired to GA as well). I have lived in GA for almost 10 years now. So, I speak with some first-hand knowledge on this topic.

Because of the exodus of manufacturing jobs and the latest Automotive bailout fiasco, Ohio has been lost to the Democrats perhaps for a decade, or longer. Ohio elected one of the most liberal Senators in '06 (Brown) and has a solidly liberal Governor in Strickland. Although, Strickland is smart and stays away from the cultural divide issues and sticks to more bread and butter stuff. He's popular in Ohio and is (surprisingly) gaining in popularity since the economic melt-down last fall. Two years is a long time, but right now he seems a shoe-in for reelection.

The GOP has its work cut out for it. I think its right to oppose the Auto bailout and this latest "stimulus" package. But, there's going to be continual fall out for these positions in the midwest. Things are bleak.

Reagan was the last president who reached out to them

actually that is untrue, some Union heads liked Reagan for his conservative moral values...after Carter's relativism

Reagan broke the air traffic controllers.....like a piece of fatwood over his knee, Reagan was hardly a Union reach around sort

The Ohio paradigm no longer works...time for a new one:

motivate more conservative whites to get out and vote, used to only take 53% or so, we had nearly 56% this time and lost due to latino wave mostly but if we can get 60% then we win

don't say it can't be done...whites in Utah and several southern states vote 80% GOP

It is true. Reagan got votes from union members...regardless of the Air Traffic Controllers. As for what you suggest, I don’t think there is any way for the GOP to lose Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virgina and win...I don’t care what percentage votes they get. Not all whites will vote GOP either...certainly not in Ohio. Wisconsin-one of the whitest states went overwhelmingly for Obama.

I agree...although, I do want to save the autos for the future. We need some manufacturing...I speak as a soon to be ex-GM wife...my hubby received a layoff notice (management before I get the ‘FU union’ freeper mail).

OH is definitely trending liberal. In many areas, 'Pubs of all stripes, conservatives, moderate, and liberal, are being bounced out of office. My district used to be represented by conservative-moderate 'Pubs and the latest election saw a liberal 'Rat knock off a conservative-moderate 'Pub. Not a big difference in policy issues, just the "R" and "D" designations. There has been a huge influx of Hispanic (Mexican) immigrants. The demographics have shifted heavily in favor of the 'Rats.

The last election portends disaster for the GOP in this area of the country. The last bulwarks against the blue tide flooding out of the Northeast into the Great Lakes region have been swept away (OH and IN). The 'Rats have the region ringed, from NY to MN.

If the 'Pubs are ever going to rebuild as a national party, they've got to re-take IN and OH in this area. Even as a regional party, it's on shaky ground, with VA and NC and FL tumbling into the 'Rat column. You know you're fighting from a weak position when you have to re-take formerly solid territory.

Well, I think you should live in your ‘conservative’ part of Virginia and pull the covers over your head and pretend like you can be conservative in a moderate to liberal state (more liberal lately) and watch more and more states fall to Dems (but we got rid of those RINO’s by God). Talk is cheap. The GOP was in better shape before they lost RINO’s in the North East, California, New York, Virginia etc. If you can’t see that I don’t what else can be said except...no Southern gentleman would tell a lady of Southern descent and upbringing to ‘take your big tent pole and...back in the day, my Grandpa and Uncles would have shot you for less.
