There was a lot of money to earn if the right wing government lost the elections. Spain is a country controlled by oligarchies that don't want to hear anything about freedom or free market.
I worked for a French bank, and their country and economy are also like what you describe. But they don't resort to killing their own citizens or allowing it to happen. (They will however cover up a mistake by one of their own that results in innocent deaths, such as in the case of the tainted blood that killed dozens, I believe.)

French people are far more politically mature than Spaniards. They had their revolutions in the 18th and 19th century and they seem to have reached a common ground in their Socialist republic.
I don’t think they are directly involved, the cash points out towards the Catalonian oligarchy as the masterminds. However, they may have provided international support to the conspirators.
It is a form of neocolonialism, also applied in Italy.
