The religion of peace has no hand in this, I’m sure.

That evil Walmart strikes again. I’m sure that the next study will show that exposure to tritium causes people to have an uncontrollable urge to buy cheap Chinese products.

A lot of smoke detectors contain tritium. The nite sights on my Glock contain tritium.

So the tritium causes the exit sign to mysteriously disappear?

It is hard to get too excited about Tritium

It is impossible to contain but
It disperses naturally to water and dilutes rapidly

Low energy beta emitter, does not penetrate skin
minor risk for internal dosimetry

Perhaps is useful to scare people

If a terrorist wanted cause a massive expensive clean up in a Wal-Mart he would just knock over a CFB display.

Isn’t Tritium used in real (not just “dirty”) nuclear weapons?

Why does this remind me of Iraq buying up a bunch of PlayStations to link together into a supercomputer ?

“The health effects of tritium exposure continue to be a hot topic of debate. It’s not strong enough to penetrate the skin, and in low quantities regulators and industry groups say tritium is safe. But when inhaled or ingested it can cause permanent changes to cells and has been linked to genetic abnormalities, developmental and reproductive problems and other health issues such as cancer.”

From what I read, after looking into the “T” on my Swiss Army watch with glow-in-the-dark hands, is that it only poses a threat when it is released into the atmosphere, is absorbed by moisture, and returns to the earth in rain and is ingested. I suppose there could be some other means of combining it with a water supply.

Event Notification Report for January 30, 2009
U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
Operations Center

Event Reports For
01/29/2009 - 01/30/2009

MISSING TRITIUM EXIT SIGNS
WalMart N.H. ETC.

THIS MATERIAL EVENT CONTAINS A “LESS THAN CAT 3” LEVEL OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL

SNIP* Sources that are “Less than IAEA Category 3 sources,” are either sources that are very unlikely to cause permanent injury to individuals or contain a very small amount of radioactive material that would not cause any permanent injury. Some of these sources, such as moisture density gauges or thickness gauges that are Category 4, the amount of unshielded radioactive material, if not safely managed or securely protected, could possibly - although it is unlikely - temporarily injure someone who handled it or were otherwise in contact with it, or who were close to it for a period of many weeks.

This source is not amongst those sources or devices identified by the IAEA Code of Conduct for the Safety & Security of Radioactive Sources to be of concern from a radiological standpoint. Therefore is it being categorized as a less than Category 3 source... http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/event-status/event/2009/20090130en.html

Tritium emits beta particles - electrons. You know, those things that come out of the wall socket? Any claims that it causes cancer are bunko.

Turn off all the lights then start looking around. They probably fell off the wall then were kicked behind some boxes or storage shelves.........

If tritium is ingested, for example, by a child who breaks a sign with a hockey stick, it's much more potent.

How charmingly Canadian!

See Tom Clancy, The Sum of All Fears.

Tritium is used in H-bombs.

Be VERY afraid.

Just be prepared to nuke someone (Mecca?) in response.

Cheers!
