The baby shambles of Alfie Patten and Chantelle Steadman

The case of the 13-year-old father is a classic tabloid tale that has much wider implicationsDaniel Foggo and Chris Gourlay When Eddy Powell looks out of his window at night and sees his hedge shaking to the accompanying sound of childish giggles, he knows exactly what it means.

“They are having sex behind it, out in the open, knowing full well I can see them,” he said. “They do it deliberately. They are making some kind of statement. Sometimes you find the condom in the morning; sometimes you don’t.” Powell, a 55-year-old former soldier, is not talking about twentysomethings behaving badly after being turned out of the pubs at closing time.

Those engaging in sexual liaisons behind his shrubbery in Hailsham, East Sussex, are children, many barely into their teens. He knows their ages and he knows their faces: some of them are his neighbours. “They are so blatant these days, they think it’s a big joke to lift up their skirts and have sex,” said Powell. Last week the consequences of such adolescent fumblings was laid bare to the nation. One of the houses in Powell’s road is home to the Patten family. Alfie Patten, a tiny, cherubic-faced 13-year-old boy who looks far younger than his age, was named on Friday as the father of Maisie, who was born four days earlier. The baby’s mother, Chantelle Steadman, was just 14 when she became pregnant; Alfie was 12.

When their bemused faces were plastered across tabloid newspapers, it prompted an outcry from politicians and social commentators dismayed at the latest example of “broken Britain”.

Just another example of how Britain is going to the dogs. Sad. Shame on the parents. Not like they were any role models to begin with. They will be on the dole for the rest of their pathetic lives. For shame.

On Drudge there is a story about how Alfie may not be the father...apparantly she was having several boys sleep over with her at her house! One of them even wants a dna test.

There's no way I'm buying this story. From the article:

So no paternity test has even been given? Chantelle has slept around? Wow! Who would've ever thought that? This boy is no more the father of that baby than I am.

“This boy is no more the father of that baby than I am.”

If she slept around as much as they’re suggesting, you may still be in the running!

From http://scotlandonsunday.scotsman.com/12700/Michael-Gove-In-what-nightmare.4982053.jp

“Alfie is the child of separated parents. His own father has fathered nine children by different mothers. Alfie’s girlfriend Chantelle, 15, is the mother of his child. Chantelle’s parents have allowed Alfie to stay the night at their family home for months now, keeping a spare school uniform to make his mornings easier. Their baby was conceived when Alfie was just 12. He hopes, with transparent and heart-rending honesty, to be a good father. When asked, however, by a reporter how he would look after his daughter financially he could only reply: “What’s financially?””

It would hardly matter if Alfie starting making babies at 12 or 22. The concept of being financially responsible for one’s offspring is obviously completely foreign to his father as well, and to his country’s government, which is subsidizing this crap on a huge scale. We (meaning all countries, including the US, which are paying people to live like this) need to go back to the old-fashioned principle of taking children away, swiftly and permanently, from parents who can’t or won’t support them.

From the first time I saw that boy's face I said to myself, "No way!" I've been following it a bit though and I'm amazed from reading the comments at the Daily Mail site at how few people are skeptical of this! So many people, particularly the Brits seem to be willing to accept what this teen mother is saying to be true.

I realize, however, that in regards to the greater story of chav-culture and its effect of Britain, it matters little if Alfie is the actual father vice some other 14 or 15 year-old boy. Britain still enjoys widespread unwed pregnancy and then offers considerable sums of money to the parent(s) of these children. Eventually, the money will run dry.

Amen. And maybe let’s start with Ms. Octopussy in LA.

I will bet, at some point, this girl will admit, ‘I just wanted a baby because I wanted someone who will love me.’

Suleman’s not even close to the worst example, though. Or at least she wasn’t, until some renegade doctor agreed to to do something totally irresponsible which led to the octuplets. She has a college degree and at least some stable work history, and was working on a master’s degree in a field in which she could reasonably expect to find employment (i.e. not creative writing, or performance art, or queer studies). And her loony parents were financing a lot of this — even bought a second house for her, and then when they couldn’t keep up payments on it, moved the whole brood in with grandma and grandpa — no public housing, so far.

This British family is living in “council” housing, collecting unemployment checks, and pumping out babies so fast you can’t keep the generations clear. Very doubtful any of them have any college, and most probably made it no further than the first stopping point in the British education, which is at about age 16 (and may even have dropped out before that). It hasn’t even occurred to them to plant the notion of financial self-sufficiency in their children, because they have no notion of it themselves.

Nadya Suleman is clearly nuts, but she at least had a PLAN for self-sufficiency comparable to the level of self-sufficiency of most Californians (i.e. not thinking of public school or supplemental payments for disability and disabled children as “welfare”), and was alternating between attending college and working in furtherance of the plan. This British family does not appear to have ever had such a plan, much less made any move towards executing such a plan. Plenty like them in every big city in the US — no high school diploma or even GED, no job, no history of anything more than odd jobs, lieflong substance abuse even during pregnancy, 3rd or 4th generation living in public housing and on welfare checks, pumping out brain damaged babies one by one, and nelgecting and abusing them for a few years before leaving them to be raised by street gangs. These people are costing us a lot more than Nutty Nadya ever will.

I seem to remember reading, when this story first broke last week, that the girl's mother had allowed the boy to 'sleep over' with her daughter. What was she thinking might happen?
