COLUMBIA, SC -- Guns and roses - the two don't typically go together unless you're a fan of the popular rock group, but on Valentine's Day, one can get you the other.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said in a press conference on Friday, "If you got an unwanted or unneeded gun, now's the time to turn it in and get something for it."
"Guns for roses" will take place at Friendship Baptist Church, allowing you to turn in your firearms in exchange for a rose and a Best Buy gift card.
Columbia Police Chief Tandy Carter says, "If we remove one gun on the 14th of February or a thousand guns on the 14th of February, there will be one less gun or a thousand fewer guns on our streets."
Police hope that leads to something more important...
Sheriff Lott says, "Bring that gun in, get that gift card, get that rose, but also know that you may be saving someone's life."
They'll use a day of love to promote love of life.

Who has the barfin’ pumpkin pic?
I wonder if we could set up our own stand. That’s a pretty good deal, a few flowers for some firearms.
Idiots...
Hmmm, dig up a rusty old single shot shotgun and turn it in for a giftcard and some flowers...
Those flowers will be very useful against the Gestapo.
If I wasn’t three hours from Columbia I’d do exactly that. As it is, it’s not worth the drive.
Flowers will come in handy. I hear that socialists are highly allergic to pretty things. That’s why they like killing babies so much.
Something I’ve wondered about these buybacks... do they have a definition of “Gun”? What about A Flare Gun? a Rubber Band Gun? a Paint Gun?
Love to sit there and argue semantics with them!
If you bring your weapon in you will make yourself available for the criminals that the police will not bother.
Yes, it's actually true.
This could save the lives of armed home invasion gangsters, terrorist snipers who just happened to pick your neighborhood, or any armed murderer/rapist/thief.
.
Hey Sheriff, GFY.
Only someone high on dope or a Liberal could be for such a stupid idea.
>> dig up a rusty old single shot shotgun
Gunshops and pawnbrokers love these events - it’s a nice way to dump krap and raise $$s.
Personally, I think they’re a missed opportunity - there are over 56,000 NRA rated instructors (about 6,000 of us are active). I think we should go with a bunch of Oleg Volk posters (see olegvolk.com) and pro-2nd Amendment literature and offer the First Steps (4-hour) Pistol/Rifle/Shotgun Orientation at cost (about $10.00) if they agree not to turn it in.
I’d love to be able to set up a booth next to one of these “buybacks” so I could offer to purchase weapons at the wholesale market price before they turn them in for flowers or coupons of whatever.
>> Sheriff Lott says, “... you may be saving someone’s life.”
Well spoken, you chalk outline drawing crime pimp.
If you have an unwanted or unneeded (?!?) gun, now is the time to take it to a dealer or FReeper, who will pay you what it’s worth. Then, you can take the money and do what you want with it.
If I bring in a Best Buy gift card and some roses, can I paw through what they’ve already collected?
