George W Bush tastes life in the slow lane at Coffee Station diner

(Jason Reed/Reuters/Corbis)

George Bush visits his local diner as President in 2004; last week he returned as just another Crawford resident James Bone in Crawford, Texas.

George Bush still likes to wake before the sun rises. No longer, however, does he have an early morning national security briefing to keep him busy.

Instead, he turned up last week at a 6.30am meeting of the local chapter of the Lions Club at a diner near his ranch in Crawford, Texas (population 705).

I hope he enjoys his free time. He probably still worries about the country but I bet he laughs at some of these characters on Capital Hill that he no longer has to deal with.

I didn’t always agree with Pres. Bush, but he has my heartfelt thanks for keeping this country safe after 9-11. I think he has integrity, and he has certainly earned a happy and peaceful retirement. My best wishes to him and Mrs. Bush, I hope the press and the loony left will leave him in peace.

God Bless President Bush and may his time in Crawford with Laura, the girls and maybe soon a grandchild be his reward for serving our Country.

I agree, he is probably kicking off his boots and watching the antics on FOX.

BTW, God Bless Tony Snow's family. He and Ari were the very best press secretaries for President Bush. This Gibbs guy is one weird duck. Must have taken the job due to lack of experience. ALI Mr. Obama.....can't quite call him PRESIDENTIAL.

He signed the Campaign Finance Reform Bill into Law, which empowered Democrats and their press. That was giving in to an enemy of our republic.

All in all, he was an average president, but one hell of a nice guy.

On the plus: Military Spending, Defense Policy, Afghanistan/Iraq/Al Queda (particularly an incredible victory in Iraq), Foreign Policy - stopping treating terrorism like a criminal problem, Supreme Court and other Judiciary Appointments, Abortion/Right to Life Orders and Policies (FCOA), Tax Cuts.

On the negative: Medicare Drug Bill, Education Spending (Spending in General), Campaign Finance.

I think he was a great president with several weak decisions. I don’t remember a president without a few bad moves, so I think in toto objective historians will judge him quite well, just below Reagan among modern presidents.

Little fact checking things that will go down in history unless someone keeps up with them: the overly optimistic phrase he uttered aboard a US aircraft carrier in the early days of the Iraq war..

President Bush never "uttered" this aboard a US aircraft carrier, it was a sign.

I wish you well, Mr. President, you deserve it.

He must be shaking his head at what is going in in the early weeks of this administration.
