Taxpayers may have to cover octuplet mom's costs

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A big share of the financial burden of raising Nadya Suleman's 14 children could fall on the shoulders of California's taxpayers, compounding the public furor in a state already billions of dollars in the red.

Even before the 33-year-old single, unemployed mother gave birth to octuplets last month, she had been caring for her six other children with the help of $490 a month in food stamps, plus Social Security disability payments for three of the youngsters. The public aid will almost certainly be increased with the new additions to her family.

Also, the hospital where the octuplets are expected to spend seven to 12 weeks has requested reimbursement from Medi-Cal, the state's Medicaid program, for care of the premature babies, according to the Los Angeles Times. The cost has not been disclosed.

Suleman received disability payments for an on-the-job back injury during a riot at a state mental hospital, collecting more than $165,000 over nearly a decade before the benefits were discontinued last year.

Some of the disability money was spent on in vitro fertilizations, which was used for all 14 of her children, Suleman said. Suleman said she also worked double shifts at the mental hospital and saved up for the treatments. She estimated that all her treatments cost $100,000.

In the NBC interview, Suleman said she will go back to California State University, Fullerton in the fall to complete her master's degree in counseling, and will use student loans to support her children. She said she will rely on the school's daycare center and volunteers.

I strongly doubt a university daycare center is equiped to care for preemie octuplets with disabilities.

Let me correct something:

A big share of the financial burden of raising Nadya Suleman's 14 children could fall on the shoulders of California's United States taxpayers,
With Porkulus about to become law, we here in Georgia have to pay taxes to bail out Californians.

No one in CA is surprised to find out that WE will be paying for these kids. I am suspect of her counseling anyone as she so obviously has mental problems of her own. What volunteers? She is a pariah here. I am also suspect of her disability claims for 3 of the first six kids. She won’t discuss them but collects money from the State for them, too. This woman is a walking train wreck. So sorry that she lives in California as we, the taxpayers, will be on the hook for all of them, kids and Mom..

This girl is so crazy—so delusional. Yet crafty enough to milk the System for all it’s worth.

She must have had help in all these scams to get money without really working. And a free education, too.

I wonder if Dr. K at the clinic has been mentoring her through all this.

I believe she received $300,000 for interviews. The state must confiscate this money to offset the huge hospital and child care costs. Something does not feel right about the $100,000 for the invitro treatments. The disability money spread over 10 years would not cover the expense. She must be receiving a lot more welfare or be working in the underground economy. I think the IRS and California tax department should knock on her door.

“Suleman received disability payments for an on-the-job back injury during a riot at a state mental hospital...”

I won’t touch that one.

“Suleman said she also worked double shifts at the mental hospital...”

Sounds like she was getting paid to be a patient to me.

How about the doctor who helped get this selfish shrew pregnant? Hit him with the bill.

I would think so since Kaiser just sent a bill to MediCal for the octuplets' care.

Something does not feel right about the $100,000 for the invitro treatments.

I agree. A psych tech can't make that much extra money unless she mooched off everyone else at the time and never spent a dime of her own.

It was reported last week by a neighbor that Nadya was paid to have the babies. No further info has explained that comment. I noticed last night that Nadya found enough spare change to get her nails done but apparently can't be bothered to wash her daughter's hair for a tv appearance.

I think the state should sue him. Probably the dumb sperm donor too. It’s time people took responsibility for their actions.

Posted to Ret.Greyhound on the other duplicate thread because you both make so much sense!!!!!!!

****The fertility doc should pay.****

With such superb logic - you should run for elective office.

That demented scientist impregnated a mentally challenged virgin with some random sperm...so in fact he was playing God or at the very least performing a sexual act by proxy.

Damn right he should take responsibility for his actions.

The MSM cracks me up. A woman has eight babies and its : “Oh horrors, the poor tax payers!” Meanwhile congress passes an almost trillion dollar spending bill and nothing is said about THAT burden on the tax payers.

Crazy, like a fox. How many more of these “fertility” welfare cases will there be before someone (county, state, or fed) has the brains and the b@lls to make it tough on low-lifes like this woman? Tough, as in denying fertility treatments to single women, denying fertility treatment to women (single or otherwise) with more than one existing child, and certainly denying or severely limiting welfare handouts to all of the above.
