Octuplets could be costly for taxpayers

Nadya Suleman has 14 children, including newborn octuplets. She has no job, no income and owes $50,000 in student loans.

Still, the 33-year-old Whittier woman said she's confident that she can afford to raise her huge family, insisting she can do it without welfare. In an interview Tuesday with NBC, she said she could use student loans to make ends meet until she finishes graduate school and gets a job.

But Suleman faces what are likely to be millions of dollars in medical bills alone, and it's increasingly likely that taxpayers will foot many of those bills.

Her family is eligible for large sums of public assistance money. Even before she gave birth to the octuplets Jan. 26, Suleman was receiving $490 in monthly food stamps, and three of her children were receiving federal supplemental security income because they are disabled.

Lowell Kepke, a spokesman for the San Francisco office of the Social Security Administration, said that a single parent with no income qualifies for up to $793 a month for each child with a physical or mental condition that results in "marked or severe functional limitations." That money is used for support and maintenance of the family, and Suleman would not be required to specifically account for how it is spent.

If Suleman's disabled children received the maximum payment, she would get nearly $2,900 a month in state and federal assistance, including the food stamps.

Could be? They already are.

I’m guessing the student loan money went for cosmetic surgeries.

Oh, please, you know that her lawyer is already writing SSI applications for all 8 of her new arrivals, and that’ll get a rubber stamp approval as doctors will of course state that they’re presently disabled. So now her litter’s worth up to $5600 a month, which will pay for a lot of diapers.

Her food stamps also will increase to nearly $600 a month, plus WIC assistance.

The welfare queen has it covered. As for the student loans, well, fat chance of the company getting any of their money back.

This is an outrage. Taxpayer’s money aside, let’s not forget that almost certainly most or all of her children will be terribly afflicted. The part of these multiple births is the vast number of such children who grow up with all manner of disabilities, those that do not die outright.

Looks like Nadya Suleman steered right into a perfect storm of right-wing moralism and left-wing utilitarianism.

Yea, well so are the 500,000 babies and children from illegal aliens, unwed teen mothers, and welfare recipients across the city, especially in Maxine Waters' Watts district.

Oh please.

To even contemplate letting a single, rather ditzy mother raise 14 children is nothing more than child abuse. There are thousands of couples who would love to adopt these children, and should get the opportunity.

Maybe not. Not if the Democrats pass their stimulus Bill and cut off health services to the babies. This could get interesting.

Exactly. While I don’t agree with her cranking out 8 more babies on the taxpayer dime, this really should be put into perspective. Split screen, one side showing the legal octuplets in all their Neonatal Intensive Care glory while the other screen shows the continuing onslaught of illegal aliens running across the border for their piece of the freebie pie.

I’d rather pay for babies being born than babies being murdered.

I would rather not pay for either babies being murdered or irresponsible people’s babies.

I wonder how these kids will feel about their mother 15-20 years from now when they read about the circumstances surrounding their birth.

This is when I think foster parenting (or ophanages) are a good idea. I personally think the kids should be taken away from this mom until she can financially pay for them on her own.

She is in her 30’s, so why is she still in college? How is she going to do that with 8 babies? This woman is crazy!!!!

I’d rather not pay for babies that aren’t mine.

This woman has stolen and is stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from taxpayers throughout the nation. She is a fraud and should be in jail right along with Madoff.

Is Swift’s ‘Modest Proposal’ starting to sound better and better yet?

This woman could solve the world hunger problem all by herself on that account.

These babies are amazingly healthy so far, and it’s generally the first few days that are the riskiest. It’s entirely possible that none of them will have any permanent disabilities.

I don’t really even know what to suggest they should do. But the situation certainly bears watching.

My impression is that subtle learning disabilities may not manifest for quite some time. At any rate, I pray for them, and hope they will all be healthy.
