Netanyahu declares victory in Israeli election

JERUSALEM – Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu has declared victory in Tuesday's parliamentary election. Netanyahu told his supporters in a speech early Wednesday that he was proud of the gains by his hardline party. Exit polls show Likud coming in second, but in a better position to lead a coalition government because of a strong showing by other nationalist parties.

Kadima won the most seats in the election...

For all that it matters, you may be correct in that statement, then again may not be. The basis for that statement is exit polls, and the difference between Kadima and Likud is probably within the statistical margin of error of the polls. So lets wait until all the ballots are counted. But whether Likud comes in first or a close second, you are correct to say that Netanyahu may become the next PM; actually, he most likely will become the next PM.

Can any one tell me, do all Knesset members represent geographic districts or are there at-large members?

I heard on the radio earlier that the exit polling omitted almost 100% of the military voters from the results. I guess the pollsters are as honest there as they are here.

There are no Knesset districts. These are national polls and if your party gets more than 2% you are in.
It gets really complicated because many parties will join together and share votes.

Success of rightist bloc may propel Netanyahu into PM’s chair

With a clear advantage to the rightist bloc in Israel’s national elections Tuesday, Benjamin Netanyahu could well end up as the next prime minister, regardless of whether his Likud party won the most votes or came second to centrist Kadima and Tzipi Livni.

Late Tuesday night, Netanyahu began contacts with several right-wing parties, including Avigdor Lieberman’s Yisrael Beiteinu.

It looks like the right bloc will control 64 or 65 seats, while the left will control 55 or 56 seats. Kadima still leads Likud 28 to 27 with the military votes still not counted. Even if Kadima holds on to the one seat edge I think Netanyahu wins because Livni can’t form a coalition without part of the right bloc defecting.

I was always impressed by Netanyahu on every news talk show appearance he did. If he was a scheduled guest, I used to make sure I caught the show.
