Heart-ache: Palin backs out of CPAC

Rush will still be there, but it’s not really “grassroots Woodstock” anymore without her. Now, because of the letdown, it’s more like grassroots Altamont: Plenty of good acts and one great one to close the show, but an angry, angry crowd nonetheless. The opening-day headliner for the annual CPAC conservative convention February 26-28, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, has pulled out, citing state business in Juneau. “We’re obviously disappointed,” said a CPAC official. A spokesman for the three-day confab, organized by the American Conservative Union Foundation and others, said that Palin, the popular former vice presidential nominee, had indicated she would be able to attend but cited “duties of governing” in bowing out. Instead, she will send in a taped message. The Democrats up there have been grumbling about her being out of state so much. Maybe she figured she could either get away for the Alfalfa Dinner or CPAC but not both and had to make a hard choice. Exit question: Huckabee to replace her? The message, at least, will be similar. And he’s anti-stimulus!

I understood that Sarah was first "invited", then "confirmed"... then recently it went back to "invited"... now she's backed out.

I am SO ticked. (See my post #60)

I hope you and zelig will have a marvelous time anyway. It's a grand event.

Do you have the lineup of speakers? I went to the CPAC site and could only find last year's.

In pulling out she again proved she’s the right person for the job, by doing the job she was elected to do, instead of furthering her career.

Then why did she fly all the way from Alaska to attend that stupid "bipartisan" Alfafa dinner with Obama in DC a couple of weeks ago? Why not reward her conservative BASE who voted for her last November, if she had to choose one trip over another?

As a CPAC attendee who signed up this year specifically to see Sarah, I am REALLY ticked.

It will be nice to see/hear Rush, although I was lucky enough to meet him before several years ago.

What makes you think that people are phony conservatives just because they voted for Mitt Romney in the primaries? Some people are willing to accept that people sometimes change their opinions or stands on the political issues. Romney became conservative. The people who are ok with it aren’t phony, they just accept his reason for changing. That doesn’t make them phony. There are different personalities out there. Many people who liked Romney have been conservative the whole time.

Geesh, they don't even have this year's agenda up yet? ACU/CPAC is slipping...

This year we're paying far more for far less for CPAC (the Diamond Package specifically). No "special events" on the Wednesday before the official start of CPAC like we used to have (White House briefings with special guests like Karl Rove et al). All we get this year (for 65% more) is the usual "Diamond welcome reception" with some special guest, supposedly. Probably David Keene of the ACU or something.

Thanks for your kind wishes... It is a grand event, and we always have a great time. I guess it'll be just a little less great this year... I was really looking forward to seeing Sarah. She would have been the highlight of the conference.

Easy....Alfalfa is a bi-partisan event. Technically, CPAC is a political event. She had stated that she wouldn’t do anything of a political nature during the legislative session.

***************

Sally, respectfully, that evades the question I put. The rationale from some was that she couldn't attend CPAC because of her duites and a volcano. What diffrence does it make if Alfalfa was bi-partisan or conservative-- it still took her away from the volcano and her duties, no?

Additionally, if she isn't doing anything "political" as you suggest, what is the formation of a Poltical Action Committee?

Exit question: Huckabee to replace her?

I've gone to every CPAC since about 2002 (I think). I believe Huckabee is there just about every year, or has been there over the past 2-3 years or so.

All I'll say about Mike Huckabee regarding CPAC is that he gives great speeches...

Alaska volcano has geologists on 24-hour alert

Because the estimates put the time for an eruption at the time of THIS event, not Alfalfa. There was no concern at this time then.

***********************
SolidWood, the Alfalfa was on January 31, 2009. Here’s a report from 1/28/09

Alaska volcano has geologists on 24-hour alert

Associated Press - January 28, 2009 9:03 PM ET

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Geologists say Alaska’s Mount Redoubt could erupt “within days.”

Concerns over an eruption have state and city officials issuing warnings so area residents can deal with an ash storm. The mountain is about 100 miles southwest of Anchorage.

I’m a conservative. I voted for Romney. Romney is not nor was he ever a conservative. I thought him to be a “lesser evil”, which is why I voted for him. He sure is a phony.

"Maybe Sarah just doesn’t want to peak too soon..."

On the other hand I would observe that Reagan's 1975 speech at CPAC was seminal. Well, perhaps that's too strong of a word, certainly he did a lot before and after but I don't think he peaked too soon and he was already developing a revolution in '75 and before.

This is a puddle I fear to tread in because it invites, well, a reaction, but in my opinion Palin needs to get serious with detailed speeches and writings and spend less time going to Obami dinners if she's going to go beyond where she is now.

That shouldn't be taken as a harsh statement but when she was running as VP she was running, as she should have, as McCain's VP and as such she was reflecting his positions.

For instance what is her position on illegal immigration? The WoT? Supreme Court Justices? The future of the GOP?

As far as I know we don't know because she hasn't said.

She needs to start.

There is a solution for how Sarah can get to CPAC, and get back again to mollify the legislature.

Like I said, she didn’t BACK OUT. She was never confirmed. She was invited this year, as was Jindal and a host of others, and she never confirmed. I called CPAC a few weeks ago and asked this same question was told that Gov. Palin had not yet confirmed but they were hoping she would attend. I believe her media guy, McAllister, told the Anchorage paper last month that she had been invited to speak at a conservative conference but was not going to be attending political events so I never expected her to be there.

Forming a PAC does not involve leaving the state during the legislative session to attend a political event. Expect her on the campaign trail this summer, though, for Bob McDonnell running for governor of Virginia.

Well said, Proud Texan, and we’re in agreement. We cannot continue to project - she needs to state positions clearly, firmly and with depth of knowledge.

As to CPAC, this is her core, her base, the committed conservatives who will put her over the top. She MUST address her refusal to attend. I have heard some valid speculation here, but the reason(s) must come from her mouth - and in a definitive fashion.

I agree. I want to hear why she won't come to CPAC, but she flew all the way from Alaska to DC to attend that ridiculous Alfafa Dinner.
