Stimulating As suitablyflip.com notes, the $813 billion "stimulus" passed by the House will cost $1.17 trillion once borrowing costs are added. That's enough to buy every U.S. household a 42-inch plasma TV, a Nintendo Wii, a 3-gig iPhone and a year of car insurance, groceries, and cable TV, Internet and phone service. Adjusted for inflation, this one bill is bigger than the New Deal and the Iraq war combined. If the $18 billion in bonuses paid by Wall Street firms with taxpayer money were shameful, and they were, then what describes the "stimulus"?
Euphemizers In a letter last week to state officials, the 13 unions in the State Employees Bargaining Agent Coalition said, "It is time to say openly and frankly to the people of this state that revenue enhancements will be necessary ..." Well, if they were being open and frank, they would have said "tax increases" and then put a number on them — $7 billion to $10 billion, and growing — to show what it would cost regular folks without lobbyists and political muscle to maintain the unions' cushy status quo through 2011.
Multiple choice Columnist Ellen Goodman was in high dungeon last week in expressing feminism's disdain for Nadya Suleman, the California woman who fell one baby short of birthing a co-ed softball team: "Infertility treatment for an unemployed, single mother of six? Eight embryos in one womb? There must be a proper word in the medical literature to describe this achievement. I think the word is 'nuts.'" No argument from us, but the criticism seems harsh coming from a feminist. After all, wasn't Ms. Suleman just exercising her reproductive rights?
