N. Korea: Chinese Fishing Vessels All Disappeared Near Disputed Yellow Sea Area

A fisherman "A development similar to previous naval clashes," the authorities wary

(Inchon = Yonhap News) Choi Jung-in = While tension continues amid series of hard-line rhetoric from N. Korea, Chinese fishing vessels suddenly disappeared near the five Yellow Sea Islands, prompting speculation on its cause.

In 1999 and 2002, when First and Second Yonpyong Naval Battle(aka Crab War I, II: firefights between both Koreas' navy,) Chinese vessels disappeared all at the same time a few days before the battles, and residents here are raising concern for a possible replay.

In a related development, the fishing authorities in Shandong Province, China (note: across the Yellow Sea, where most Chinese vessels are coming,) posted on its website a notice to all captains of fishing vessels, dated on Jan. 23, that they should be extra careful about activities in the area. It was also confirmed that they sent this notice via radio to each ship.

Feb. 15 is Kim Jong-il's birthday. Some observers here expect something to happen around that time, which is five days away.

This could be routine precautionary measure from Chinese side, but it is also likely that they have more specific information about the situation than N. Korea's announcements on official media.

Anyway, it is a worrying development. Something may happen soon.
