Bracing Ourselves
The Wall Street Journal ^ | Feb 6, 2009 | Peggy Noonan

Posted on 02/08/2009 5:22:46 PM PST by Wpin

All week the word I kept thinking of was "braced." America is braced, like people who are going fast and see a crash ahead. They know huge and historic challenges are here. They're not confident they can or will be met. Our most productive citizens are our most sophisticated, and our most sophisticated have the least faith in the ability of our institutions to face the future and get us through whole. They have the least faith because they work in them.

Tuesday I talked to people who support a Catholic college. I said a great stress is here and coming, and people are going to be reminded of what's important, and the greatest of these will be our faith, it's what is going to hold us together as a country. As for each of us individually, I think it's like the old story told about Muhammad Ali. It was back in the 1960s and Mr. Ali, who was still Cassius Clay, was a rising star of boxing, on his way to being champ. One day he was on a plane, going to a big bout. He was feeling good, laughing with friends. The stewardess walked by before they took off, looked down and saw that his seatbelt was unfastened. She asked him to fasten it. He ignored her. She asked him again, he paid no attention. Now she leaned in and issued an order: Fasten the seatbelt, now. Mr. Clay turned, looked her up and down, and purred, "Superman don't need no seatbelt."

She said, "Superman don't need no airplane. Buckle up." And he did.

We all think we're supermen, and we're not, and you're lucky to have a faith that both grounds you and catches you. Go to http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123388255500354969.html for complete article.

I don't follow what Noonan writes. She might be as disgraceful as you all say, but this article is good. I like this part:
On the economy, I continue to find no one, Democrat or Republican, who has faith that the stimulus bill passed by the House will solve anything or make anything better, though many argue that doing absolutely nothing will surely make things worse by not promising at least the possibility of improvement through action.
In other words, the stimulus bill will do nothing economically useful, but it makes people feel good. Sounds right.

I hate crass metaphors, but I heard Noonan Dennis Miller after the Inaugural, and she literally sounded post-coital ~ seriously! I can’t say that I had heard very many interviews with her before that, but I simply don’t recall her sounding like that before.

She’s just another NYC lib; selling papers. She could come back to our side, but it would only be to increase her readership. She has no core values.

I couldn’t possibly read her again ~ ever!

Murdoch's WSJ could cut some more expenses by cutting her column. Too late Peggy no one finds you interesting anymore. You have no credibility. Your a dried up old drone whose time is passed.

I think what moved me most in this article is the quiet desperation she so poignantly expresses. We KNOW the dark clouds are on the horizon but we must push forward, if nothing else because we do not know what else to do...

“Bracing Ourselves” ... I would like to, but I’m too busy “girding my loins”.

ROTFLOL....I don’t know what I would do without witty Freeper remarks to ease the horror of it all!

Still reading..but this stuck out:

“His political mistake, which in retrospect we will see as huge, is that he remoralized the Republicans. He let them back in the game.’

WE???? She sounds sad that the republicans are getting their mojo back!!

i’ve been saying it for months. the dems have until june to crater the US economy and still blame the former administration/republicans.

once its cratered, they will provide various social programs people will need to be able to eat. at that point, we will be in 1930... and the dems will have secured power for 20-40 years

i’m still trying to figure out how to avoid the splatter. keeping your monies in the market is just asking to get hosed. keeping it in dollars or euros... both will plummet. the chinese rmb is one idea, as their unhooking from the dollar is soros end goal anyhow. right now, all i can see is gold, as it has never lost its buying power

Unless she is content to write about how she helped lose the country, figuring it out, AFTER THE FACT, isn’t good enough anymore.

Dramatic sighs while mouthing banal observations is her trademark.

This also describes that vapid Mika Brz..whatever.

I’m visiting this thread only to say that I’m not reading the column. I got sick of Peggy Noonan writing about nothing but how we all feel a long time ago.

It’s the Column About Nothing.

BTW, Peggy. Obama wants the United States to END, and that is the purpose of all his policy choices. He wants an American city to get nuked. He wants to see Americans freezing and starving. He and his buddies will be helicoptered out and spend their days in comfort, courtesy of George Soros.

On your recommendation, I will give her a read, having given up on her a while back. She is lost, but, like George Will, can still express some coherence once in a while.

BS. Nobody’s arguing that we do nothing. Nobody. Noonan’s a spent piece of tarnished .....
