We haven't just thrown our hands up and done nothing. We've been fighting the war on drugs for decades now. Millions of people have been arrested, thousands of tons of drugs are seized every year. More than half the people in our federal prisons are in on drug convictions. We spend many billions of dollars a year fighting the drug war. On the borders we seize thousands of tons of drugs every year. With illegals we're seeing record numbers of deportations and record numbers of “illegal reentry” charges filed on those who come back after being deported. Illegal alien population growth has slowed and the number of illegal aliens in this country may even be dropping now. We haven't thrown our hands up in the air and done nothing.

Building fences will I think slow the number of people coming across the border looking for work or to be with family. The harder we make it for them to come the fewer who will be motivated enough and have the resources to make it over here. It will help with the illegal alien problem. It won't do much for the illegal drug problem because there is just too much money that can be made on each load of drugs that is smuggled. You've seen the government estimates. The government is estimating that Mexican Drug Trafficking Organizations our bringing in about $13.8 billion a year on the drugs they sell to Americans. You think they'd let a fence stop them from making all this money? We need to be realistic here. That's all.
