More than $2,000 a month for day care. Some of the highest phone bills in the country. Jam-packed, 50-plus-minute commutes to work.
You knew it was tough to live in New York City but this tough?
A new report shows just how ugly and expensive New York City can be, especially for the middle class, squeezed by skyrocketing living costs and stagnant wages.
The study, released Thursday by the Center for an Urban Future, shows that New York City is hands-down the most expensive place to live in the country.
Among the findings:
A New Yorker would have to make $123,322 a year to have the same standard of living as someone making $50,000 in Houston.
In Manhattan, a $60,000 salary is equivalent to someone making $26,092 in Atlanta.
You knew it was expensive to live in Manhattan, but Queens? The report tagged Queens the fifth most expensive urban area in the country.
The average monthly rent in New York is $2,801, 53% higher than San Francisco, the second most expensive city in the country.

It really depends.
As a single guy who owns his Manhattan apartment, I don’t find conditions that onerous, and the pay is still high.
There’s not enough $$$ in the world for me to live in NY.
Or Boston.
Or San Fran.
You go live in the apartments on Avenue Z and West 2nd street in Brooklyn. Can get a studio there for about 350 a month after you pay off the super.
New York, New York, a town with such a high price you had to name it twice
In one fell swooop, Obama made the ‘wealthy” middle class in NYC.
I bet they regret that vote.
Connecticut is nice... I graduated from Ridgefield High School near Danbury.
New York is a great city...those who don’t have six figure salaries live in the Bronx, Brooklyn or Staten Island.
I like our rural life. Well and septic have perks, like, no bills or added taxes.
It takes 60k in Manhattan to equal 26k in Atlanta.
The family making 26k will pay zero federal income tax and get an earned income credit windfall. The family making 60k gets to pay taxes.
Why do people in NY support liberals so much, when taxes are so punative to them?
.
Man the Barracades and keep em up there.
Septic systems have bills...if you pump them, remember?
Erma Bombeck said that grass grows greener over the septic tank.
IF you can ignore the politics, there is no place in the world like New York. I couldn’t live anywhere else.
I know many of you will think I’m crazy, since I’m a pro-life conservative (I guess it depends on your frame of reference) but, for a lifelong NYer, it is a fact of life.
Because they are blinded to ‘cause’ and ‘effect’ like most Westerners.
I “get” it ...was born and lived there as a young adult ... there really is no place like it, for all its problems. Couldn’t live there now, tho. IF I were to return to NYC for any reason, I’d be joining you on SI as the least hostile of the boroughs to conservatives.
Great place to visit...
...there’s a reason that I live in Houston.
I wanted to have a family.
I grew up in River Edge in northern NJ.
I used to love NYC. Unfortunately, not any more.
Well...maybe not.
I visited NYC for the first time a couple years ago. The mission was to see a game at Yankee Stadium before its demise.
Couldn’t wait to get OUTTA there. It’s the graffiti capital of the world, way too expensive, smells bad, and full of rude people.
The highlight of my visit was that Jason Kendall (A’s catcher) hit a rare home run.
