"A failure to act, and act now, will turn crisis into a catastrophe." -- President Obama, Feb. 4.
Catastrophe, mind you. So much for the president who in his inaugural address two weeks earlier declared "we have chosen hope over fear." Until, that is, you need fear to pass a bill.
And so much for the promise to banish the money changers and influence peddlers from the temple. An ostentatious executive order banning lobbyists was immediately followed by the nomination of at least a dozen current or former lobbyists to high position. Followed by a Treasury secretary who allegedly couldn't understand the payroll tax provisions in his 1040. Followed by Tom Daschle, who had to fall on his sword according to the new Washington rule that no Cabinet can have more than one tax delinquent.

Funny, Ol’ Chuck didn’t have a problem when Paulson was pulling the same trick:
“Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson went to Capitol Hill seeking $700 billion. He got an earful. Now, $700 billion is a serious sum, and Congress has the fiduciary responsibility to make sure the money it appropriates goes for a good cause. But from the indignant congressional demands for a laundry list of quid pro quos, you would have thought Paulson wanted it for his personal use.”
“In fact, Paulson is a lame duck. In four months, he is gone. Paulson is asking for the money not for self-aggrandizement but for the same reason Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke and the markets are asking for it: to prevent the American economy from going over a cliff.”
Ah yes, Ol’ Chuck sure does like passing out the money to SOME people.
While I’m loathe to agree with anyone who’s been an editor of The New Republic, I have to say Chuck hit this one out of the ballpark - or ballpork.
Did anyone else notice that when he’s been using theh teleprompter, the networks (at least the ones I’ve been watching) are making no attempt to hide it? I find that interesting in a strange sort of way because when he was campaigning, you never could see the teleprompter, but you knew it was there.
Bump for later.
Sure, the banks and other companies have been clamoring for them. You know, in much the same way that a 4-year old really wants that box of Chocolate Covered Sugar Blasted Frosty-Os. Just because they want it doesn't mean it's good for them or anyone around them...
I'll still take Mark Steyn. I'm not quibbling with your choice, just putting in a plug for the guy I think is the best columnist in the country.
My wife calls Charles “Spock”. Maybe not a bad comparison.
In his "speech" last night, he just resorted to shouting and yelling like Jeremiah Wright or some Third World dictator. That's not an American style of politics. He seems to think he can shout, yell, and jive this Porkulus bill through. He's trying to be a demagogue. Claiming spending is "stimulus." He's flailing around now. Deer caught in the headlights. It's not working out like he thought it would be. He's been pampered by Affirmative Action his whole life and now he's running out of pampering.
It would be hilarious if all our futures weren’t imperiled by the current crop of nitwits in DC.
Fascinatingly smooth, Captain.

Or by the Affirmative Action arithmetic of Barack Hussein and Michelle. The numbers don't add up. This is the disastrous end result of pampering and rewarding their self-esteem by Affirmative Action. He's running out of Affirmative Action karma. So are the Dems.
"The Emperor wears no clothes."
Let's HOPE Obambi learns a lesson from this debacle.
Well you know, Obama is the President, not Pelosi. I see people giving him a pass because he didnt write it. Sorry, I believe all this is what he wanted and he was aiming to get it all through using the economic crisis to overreach. His evil little advisor has said he didnt want to waste a good crisis.
Um, I don't mean to be rude, but I would like to remind everyone who talks about this as if President Obama were the "Supreme Leader," that according to the Constitution, all spending Bills originate in the House. So this Bill SHOULD have been written by Pelosi, or someone of her ilk.
Mark
I highly doubt it. Right about now (and probably for the past several days) he's yelling and screaming at some poor intern or Secret Service bodyguard, "Why are all of these people so stupid!?"
All he knows how to do is that jive act with the teleprompter, making his voice quaver as he shouts and yells for fake theatrical effect. He can only do that “I have a Dream” act for so long. At some point he has to answer rational questions about numbers and the arithmetic.
It doesn’t add up. Affirmative Action math doesn’t work very well with the federal budget.
