'Che' Star Discovered His 'Groovy' Hero From Rolling Stones Song
NewsBusters ^ | February 5, 2009 | P.J. Gladnick

The only thing more shallow than the "Che" box office receipts which are currently stuck at less than a measly million are the reasons given by the star of that movie, Benicio del Toro, for admiring the character he portrays in that movie. One can only shake his head in sadness at the pathetically shallow nature of del Toro's admiration while reading this American Thinker article written by the author of Exposing the Real Che Guevara, Humberto Fontova:

"Del Toro was fascinated with Che Guevara from the first time he heard his name mentioned in the Rolling Stones song Indian Girl," reads the introduction to an interview with Benicio del Toro last month in Britain's Guardian. "Of course he found himself fascinated by Ernesto Che Guevara - he loved the Stones, and Emotional Rescue was the first album he'd bought. "I hear of this guy and he's got a cool name. Che Guevara!" Del Toro as good as swoons when he says it. "Groovy name, groovy man, groovy politics!"

"Che" is such a BOMB that it went straight to cable already. I saw it advertised on Pay-Per-View on my Direct TV. You had to pay $7.99 for each of the two parts or almost 16 bucks total which means almost nobody is going to pay to be bored by that flick on Pay-Per-View.

For what it’s worth, I believe “Indian Girl” is one of the worst Rolling Stones songs ever, on an unusually mediocre album.

Just my humble opinion.

PS Yes, I think they have released one or two decent records since 1981! “Voodoo Lounge” was pretty good, if you’re into the Stones. Again, just an opinion.

I kinda figured Che belonged in “Sympathy For The Devil”.

Anyone who wants to know the real Che, needs to watch “The Lost City.”

Emotional Rescue was AWFUL, IMO.

I think that Tattoo You was the last good Stones album (1980?)

Of course, I'm not enough of a fan to even be willing to argue about it, so if someone tells me I'm wrong I won't defend my opinion.

"...Groovy name, groovy man, groovy politics!..."

Sure, if your political groove is predicated on personally murdering Doctors, Professors, Judges, Police/Public officials, Artists, citizens who oppose your groove, etc. by the hundreds.

I’ve seen how little this thing made, but anyone have solid info on what it cost?

Most people would definitely agree with you on Tattoo You. Actually, that album was a collection of out-takes from the preceeding several years, culled together so they’d have something to tour behind and promote.

It looks to me like the Stones put out their best work when their backs are to the wall. Most of their 80’s work, if not all, after Tattoo You is dreck to my ears. The three major records they have released since, Voodoo Lounge, Bridges to Babylon and A Bigger Bang, I would rate as “acceptable” to “good,” although the formula is only being refined, not improved. Tattoo You is certainly the last classic for me.

Good point. But notice the outcast status the movie (and writer) enjoys now with Hollywood and the US audience. The country has now embraced the left. We are headed for European/Cuban socialism and it is possible that our President could very well be the new Che non-citizen hero at the helm.

Yeah, I heard about his upcoming appearance in that. No need for a remake of that one. (Although I prefer “Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman” when it comes to Universal horror flicks.)

Wasn’t that the McCain campaign slogan in ‘08?

Oh no! Did he really say that? I am so embarassed for him. He sounds like a teenage girl.

I was just reading “Exposing the Real Che...” yesterday. At the end he was running around the Bolivian jungle tricking peasants to join him. He would tell them that they would go to Cuba and Russia to train. When they would meet up with at the camp, he would hand them a rifle and say “Your a guerilla now!” and treat them like slaves. What a great book. Also read “Shadow Warrior”. Lost City was great!
