CURL: Obama now in combat mode
Washington Times ^ | February 5, 2009 | Joseph Curl

President Obama, fresh off his first Washington apology tour, grew combative Wednesday, asserting that America voted for him, not the other guy, and demanding that lawmakers "put aside politics" -- well, Republican lawmakers, anyway.

A day before he headed to a luxury resort to meet behind closed doors with Democrats, the Harvard graduate lectured the less economically astute, ridiculing the Reaganomics Doctrine held dear by Republicans, who prefer tax cuts to new spending to bounce America out of its financial mess.

"Now, in the past few days I've heard criticisms of this plan that echo the very same failed theories that helped lead us into this crisis -- the notion that tax cuts alone will solve all our problems," the president said at the White House. "I reject that theory, and so did the American people when they went to the polls in November and voted resoundingly for change."

The statement, the first of its kind in public, was reminiscent of what Mr. Obama said in private just days after taking office. In the White House's Roosevelt Room, he told a Republican senator who opposed an element of the stimulus package that "I won. I will trump you on that."

My guess is that eighty percent of the people who voted for Obama don't even know that there is a stimulus package being voted on, much less what it contains.

It turns out that Americans voted for all the U.S. Representatives as well.

Who would have thought it?

I really want to emphasize that *neither* a Democrat spending spree *nor* Republican economic growth will get us out of this situation.

Obama and the Democrats are going to get seven bells knocked out of them by trying to spend their way out of this mess.

What the Republicans desperately need to be doing right now is studying economics, because if they try following *their* tried and true economic growth policies, it is going to be as bad for them as for Obama and the Democrats.

Our current, post-WWII easy credit, deficit economy is an experimental economy, inherently different than the one that existed before the Great Depression. It is also fatally flawed, and needs to return to the old, proven method of only buying what you have money to pay for.

Again, since WWII, the *only* two techniques to keep the easy credit economy afloat were the Democrat’s inflationary spending, and the Republican’s economic growth. But with vast deficits, both by the government and ten times as much by business, it is over.

What Obama is doing, in military terminology, is called “reinforcing defeat”. It does not work, and wastes what resources you have, throwing good money after bad. It will break them.

Were the Republicans in charge right now, they would be doing the same thing they did before, slashing taxes and trying to get corporate America to more than quintuple its growth. They should thank their lucky stars that they are not in charge right now.

Again, both will fail, because the economic system we have now *cannot* be maintained. We absolutely must cut back. Severely.

Think of our economy as being like the tremendously obese man named Manuel Uribe. Underneath that wall of fat there is a skeleton, muscles and internal organs, but until he loses something on the order of a thousand pounds, he cannot even stand up.

Both the Democrats and Republicans right now are still focused on doing anything they can to keep him horribly obese. But it is his obesity that is killing him. Only when he has lost much of his dead weight, can he even stand up and get some exercise for his “real” body, buried under all that flab.

Or debt, in the case of our economy.

So if you get a chance to talk to a Republican leader, let him know that the days of *any* deficit spending are over.

Social Security is over.

Medicare and Medicaid are over.

Huge defense expenditures are over.

It may even be necessary for the US government to default on its national debt. This will mean the effective end of international trade, other than commodity swaps.

Hoover era Republicans were caught in their belief that their economic policies were right, because they had been right before. But they were very wrong, and 75 years later are still hated for it.

So let’s not make the same mistake again. Let the Democrats take the really big hit for this economic catastrophe, because they lack the pragmatism and foresight to see that the game is over.

The Republicans need to hit the books, so that when their turn comes, they will be ready to quickly do what is necessary to get national economic recovery.

It was fun while it lasted.

Hey, if the Bill is so great go ahead and pass it without the Republicans on board. What’s the big deal, you’ve got the votes. Truth is, they want cover as a bipartisan bill ‘cause they now it’s a turkey.

They are now trying to rush it through (vote this week), beacause the polls are going south in a hurry. More people now oppose it than support it. Go Barry go, Change We Can Believe In!

Mr. Obama’s first trip aboard Air Force One will take him to a luxury resort in Williamsburg.

He's taking Air Force One on a trip of about 100 miles? Where's Algore? What kind of carbon footprint is this? Aw ... never mind.

That isn’t what I think of Free Republic as being about. I think the majority on this forum did not vote for the Obamassiah NOT because he was black, but because we disagreed with his party’s policies. My husband and I would have voted for a black man IF he had reflected our politics. (Reagan had very good results from tax cuts for many years.) The Democrats are mostly interested in social engineering that will insure Dem voting blocs forever.

I’ll get it rolling - any FReepers with an online store who want to carry these? I’ll front the cost for the puppets, we’ll split profits. Might as well, since I’ll be in China for all of March anyway!

A day before he headed to a luxury resort to meet behind closed doors with Democrats,...

He should be going to Kentucky to see what can be done for those people who are still without power from the ice storm. Actually he should have gone there weeks ago. What an elitist jerk and hypocrite. And not a word from the MSM.

Has anyone else noticed that every time Obama wants to negate anyone else’s thoughts, he uses the word “NOTION” in order to negate and pooh-pooh to ridicule their thinking? These word semantics antics have become extremely transparent.

IF McCain had opposed that original “stimulus package” that no one knows where the money went, instead of going along to get along mavericking, he and Governor Palin would have won hands down. Instead, he let Obama make him look like Ned in the First Reader during that episode. Let us see some adult behavior guys!
