Hot Seat: Duncan D. Hunter (Interview)
San Diego Union Trib ^ | 2/4/09 | editors

Posted on 02/04/2009 2:13:21 PM PST by pissant

GOP Rep. Duncan D. Hunter, in his first month as East County congressman after succeeding his father, took our questions on several topics:

For opposing the possible move of Guantanamo detainees to Camp Pendleton or Miramar Marine Corps Air Station, you were criticized in a Union-Tribune editorial for having insufficient confidence in the Pentagon's good judgment and its concern about the public safety of San Diego County residents. What is your response?

It's not a matter of whether I have confidence in the Pentagon's judgment and ability to coordinate an orderly transfer, because I do. In Iraq and Afghanistan, our military men and women continue to effectively manage many of the day-to-day security and government operations. Last week's successful provincial election in Iraq, which occurred in coordination with our military forces, is proof of that fact. We are winning in Iraq because of the good judgment of our military leadership and the collective efforts of all those who have contributed to the Iraq mission.

I'm most concerned with President Obama's judgment in closing Guantanamo Bay and transferring terrorists to American soil. The decision to close the facility was made without any consideration for the security risks and legal consequences that will undoubtedly arise. Equally concerning is the fact that Camp Pendleton and Miramar are on the short list of terrorist relocation sites. Both bases have an important wartime mission, preparing sailors and Marines for combat. Transferring terrorists to either Camp Pendleton or Miramar would create an enormous distraction and interfere with the important training operations that occur at each base every day.

Do you understand why some people might look at your stand and see it as being inconsistent with your strong views about deferring to the military on such issues as whether to put a civilian airfield at Miramar?

A small dose of sanity to stave off the madness.

It’s going to be real interesting when libtards realize that the scumbags were better off at Gitmo.

Unfortunately I figure we’ll hear the first calls to release them to halfway houses within 6 months of them landing in an American prison. To make matters worse there are already Canadian libtards wanting to give them asylum in Canada.

I wouldn’t even need a primary race to make that decision. I just don’t see anyone else even remotely worthy.

Hunter/Palin Palin/Hunter, either is just fine with me.

I’ve said it before and I’ll keep on saying it until people realize what the real danger is by releasing the terrorists into facilities here in America: As soon as the terrorists get moved into their new digs, this nation will begin to experience continual terrorist attacks upon the cities surrounding those prisons. The terrorists still believe we are cowards and will cave to their demands .. so they will begin their attacks assuming we will release their friends .. if they just begin attacking our SCHOOLS, CHURCHES, MALLS, HIGH RISE BUILDINGS, etc.

I just heard a GOP talking head say this morning that moving these terrorists to the USA is exactly what the terrorists want. This move would give them license to attack us.

I’ve seen a map (a few years ago) showing all the locations of militant Islamic communities. The attackers are already here .. just waiting for a reason to attack us within the USA.

Why do people think so many guns are being sold ..?? Because we are smart enough to figure out that if the Gitmo terrorists are moved here .. we are going to be put in mortal danger and so are our families.

This is the most stupid, ignorant, irresponsible decision ever made .. but being it’s a democrat making it - I don’t expect much more.

And .. nobody has even considered what will happen when the terrorists get a load of the menu at our fed prisons - they will probably stage a revolt inside the prison because they will expect the same menu and treatment they received in Gitmo - which puts all out correctional officers in danger.

The decision to close Guantanamo Bay was made by President Obama, not our military. It was not a tactical or strategic decision – it was purely political. If it weren't, President Obama would have more closely examined the issue before rushing to a decision on his first day in office.

Great answer, even though a couple moronic commenters at the website seem unable to grasp the logic.
