Paging former Mayor Marion Barry!
So, they can get marijauna residue from a photograph now?
If this sheriff goes through with this I see a well funded opponent in his political future.
They would have to prove that whatever was in the pipe was illegal. Hard to do.
GO COCKS! U-S-C GOOOOOOO COCKS!
“A spokesman for Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott, who is known for his tough stance on drugs”.

As opposed to battling the tougher crimes involving violence and property damage and theft.
Pot smoking college kids are not going to hurt anyone. As a public health threat, their alcohol consumption is by far the greater danger.
One more life ruined by a government that thinks it needs to control every aspect of our lives.
Ummm, pot picture or not, this would be beyond stupid and probably go a long way to get marijuana legalized.
Prosecuting someone for a PICTURE? Heck, go in to court, say “I thought it was pot, turns out it was tobacco, prove otherwise”.
Someone is just trying to make a name for themself.
I worked in a photoshop in the UK. I developed a guy’s photos from a trip. We had to go through the photos to see if they were done properly and to count them before packaging. It the stack were snaps of he and his girlfriend snorting coke with a rolled up dollar bill. When he came to pick them up (and boy was he an arrogant SOB) I called him into the back of the shop. He barely spoke because he was too busy talking of the cell phone. He remained talking......and then I held the picture up. “Uh, I’ll call you back”, he said. Then, finally, he hung up. I chewed his @ss out and told him I had every right to call the police. Told him what a dumb@ss he was.....and sent him on his merry way. ;)
What a dumb@ss Phelps was to admit he was smoking pot.
This is silly. What next? Will police charge people for drug use mentioned in their biographies?
Nanny statist attention whore.
How about you try solving a crime involving an actual victim? Or is that too dangerous, Leon?
By this rationale, why don’t they charge our current sitting President. Afterall, he published an autobiography admitting to smoking pot, snorting blow, and drinking alcohol as a minor. Why not charge him?
End the failed war on pot.
The photo doesn't have the strength of evidence that can prove he smoked marijuana, but, considered along with Phelps abject apology, it sure seems that way. He never denied the assumption that he was smoking pot. So, very likely no criminal charges will ensue but this won't help Phelps's merchandise himself. Towering achievements in sports (his 8 Olympic gold metals for swimming) and sucking marijuana smoke into your lungs tend to be somewhat incompatible.
Some conservatives characterizing Michael Phelp's alleged pot smoking as of no consequence and irrelevant demonstrates how far the U.S. has gone down the road toward moral bankruptcy. This young man is a famous, highly acclaimed athlete and his sucking up what is very likely marijuana smoke sends the same old corrupting message that getting high is 'cool' and nothing to be concerned about. See, even political conservatives agree! Sad.
Any damage the pot would have caused him pales in comparison to the legal damage caused by this ignorant war.
The only real problems that pot has caused ANYONE successful is legal trouble and other issues stemming from being illegal.
So, why doesn’t this Sheriff go after the current occupant of the White House? He has admitted to pot and cocaine use in his own biography that Bill Ayers wrote for him. Why play favorites?
