Alaska's Mount Redoubt continued to rumble and emit steam Sunday but showed no dramatic burst of energy from the previous day, geologists monitoring the volcano said, but a Japanese volcano did erupt.

A snowcapped volcano northwest of Tokyo erupted early Monday, sending up a huge plume of smoke and gas and raining fine, powdery ash on parts of Japan's capital.

some more info:

Evidence of eruption continues to mount

Mount Redoubt still hadn’t blown its stack as of Sunday evening, but some awesome stuff was happening high atop the restless volcano.

Scientists at the Alaska Volcano Observatory in Anchorage showed stunning pictures from a Saturday flyover to demonstrate the immense forces at work within Redoubt, located 106 miles southwest of Anchorage.

Two holes — one more than the length of a football field across — have formed in Drift Glacier below the summit. Each of the holes, known as fumaroles, is blowing steam and volcanic gas 2,000 feet into the air.

A vast sunken area known as a “collapse feature” also has appeared in recent hours. And a thin mudflow is streaming down the 10,197-foot mountain.

It takes immense heat welling up within the volcano to make the giant holes and other features in so brief a time, volcanologist Peter Cervelli said.

Redoubt could explode at any time — or take its sweet time and keep us in suspense for days or weeks, he said...

I fell in to a burning ring of fire
I went down,down,down
and the flames went higher.
And it burns,burns,burns
the ring of fire
the ring of fire.

The AVO website reported earlier this morning at 3:14:48 that, “A high intensity burst of volcanic tremor occurred from about 2:44 through 2:50 AST this morning at Redoubt. The tremor episode appears to have ended for now. There was no eruption associated with this tremor.”

“AVO continues to observe potential activity with seismic, satellite and radar data. The volcano has not erupted.

Clear weather views from the web camera show nothing but darkness so far this morning.

The Aviation Color Code remains at ORANGE and the Volcano Alert Level remains at WATCH.”

And Redeoubt is rumbling again. I just checked their website again and they have a new information release:

Redoubt Volcano Latest Observations
2009-02-02 09:13:03

A short, high-intensity burst of volcanic tremor occurred at 8:47 AKST this morning, and since then a series of small repeating earthquakes is ongoing. There is no eruption associated with this earthquake activity. The volcano is just now appearing in the Redoubt HutCam, and no steam plume is visible.

AVO continues to observe potential activity with seismic, satellite and radar data. The volcano has not erupted.

The Aviation Color Code remains at ORANGE and the Volcano Alert Level remains at WATCH.

The amount of “greenhouse gases” the volcanoes will release will be staggering. Yet the world will cool.
