Springsteen's Homage to Pete Seeger
By Tom Moon

World Cafe, April 25, 2006 - On the new collection We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions, Bruce Springsteen honors the folk music tradition that has inspired many of his own compositions over the years. All the tracks on the new album are standards closely associated with folk icon Pete Seeger.

Springsteen assembled large ensemble of acoustic musicians to flavor the proceedings with everything from accordion to tuba. Rock critic Tom Moon talks with host David Dye about why he reacted so strongly and positively towards this latest offering by The Boss.

NYT Writer Corrects Record: Pete Seeger 'Only' 40 Years Late in Denouncing Stalin
By P.J. Gladnick
2007-09-02

The New York Times has now corrected [1] a "smear" about Pete Seeger being 50 years too late in denouncing Stalin. Thanks to the intrepid research of Times reporter Daniel J. Wakin, the record has now been set straight. Pete Seeger was only about 40 years too late in criticizing Stalin.

"Seeger was antiwar during the period of the Nazi-Soviet Pact; pro-war after the Soviet Union was the ally of the United States; and anti-war during the years of the Cold War and Vietnam. To Nichols -a rather dense left-winger -it is good form to acknowledge that perhaps 'Stalin was a bad guy,' and then simply get over it, and move on to campaign for very American socialist causes." --Ronald Radosh (former communist)

Earth Day, April 22, 1970:
"The nationwide event included opposition to the Vietnam War on the agenda, but this was thought to detract for the environmental message.
Pete Seeger was a keynote speaker and performer at the event held in Washington DC."

One last comment on this, and I am done ..

ETL ..

Just a bit of advice, FWIW ..

I think it would be best for you to understand that hardly anyone on this forum (me included) has any major disagreement with you in principle, on the basis or your views. In fact, my first post to you IN THIS THREAD was in agreement with you. I CAN’T STAND Springsteen. And although I enjoy folk music (to some extent .. among other varieties of music) and rock, I know that those that I am listening to (and I don’t own a Pete Seeger record or CD for the record) possibly hold different views than I.

John Lennon’s “Imagine” has always troubled me, because *I* don’t want to “imagine” a world where “there is no Heaven ..”

Neil Young has some VERY different views than I .. but I am still a sucker for “Heart of Gold” and a few other Neil Young songs. I *can* separate the artist AND the music to some degree. Face it: “artists” (and I have a few in my family) are typically “out there.”

When you started your war against me, yes .. I took offense. Because all of the sudden, I had some FReeper attacking me for MY views and I had PREVIOUSLY posted in agreement with you! Here’s a fact: not everyone on this forum .. or in life .. is going to agree with you down to the nitty gritty. That doesn’t make them your enemy. And treating them as such WILL cause strife!

People have a Right to speak their mind (off of this board as well), and you may disagree with them but don’t start a war with them and then start lecturing them on the “proper” method of setting up HTML tags to their posts! Most people are just trying to post a quick comment and aren’t going to take forty minutes to make certain that their posts comply with ETL’s guidelines! And they WILL take offense .. especially if YOU are in major violation of some VERY important Terms of Service!

So .. suggestion: calm down. Realize that most people on this forum (myself included, to a degree) agree with many of your views. But everyone also has differences to other degrees. That DOESN’T make them your enemies. And you are probably not going to change them.

Try and enjoy your time here .. as I am trying to enjoy MINE.
