The Best E-Mail Program Ever How Gmail destroyed Outlook.

As of this week, Gmail has reached perfection: You no longer have to be online to read or write messages. Desktop programs like Microsoft Outlook have always been able to access your old mail. There is a certain bliss to this; if you've got a pile of letters that demand well-composed, delicate responses (say you're explaining to your boss why you ordered that $85,000 rug), unplugging the Internet can be the fastest way to get things done. That's why offline access is a killer feature—it destroys your last remaining reason for suffering through a desktop e-mail program.

I don’t do Outlook.

I don’t trust Google.

I have already had an e-mail via my local ISP “filtered” where it connected to Yahoo.

Beware, the knobs of dissent are tightening.

Anybody report their experiences with this? I had an option to use GMail but turned it down because it was Google’s.

I have and use both, but Outlook >>>>>> gmail. Outlook is a full fledged feature rich application, and I can’t imagine anything better than Outlook 2007. gmail has it’s place, but in no way is it a replacement or even comes close to besting Outlook.

I am glad these online apps are starting to provide offline access though, that has been my biggest beef with the whole online cloud app paradigm. I’m still struggling with the fact that my data files actually reside out in cyber space and not on my computer though. I don’t think I’ll ever get over that, guess I’m too old school.

Outlook 2007 has numerous features.

I would not trust Google for anything!

I never liked Outlook, just seemed like another bloated, clunky MS app. Back in the pre-webmail days I used Eudora, now I use Gmail because it’s easy to set up multiple addresses. Whenever I go to a website I know is going to spam me, or have to sign up for something I use a Gmail address that acts like a spam dumping ground. This leaves my main emails fairly clean.

From the beginning, gmail has allowed you to download all your email to Outlook or whatever email application you want on your PC. From gmail, click on Settings, and then “Forwarding and POP/IMAP”. It gives you directions on how to set up your email app to download from Gmail.

I use a gmail account but I don’t see how to easily group or find email from a certain person.

And I know there are other features others must want.

But what’s Outlook? :)

(I use Apple Mail and Entourage too.)

BTW,

I think EUDORA

is the best email program

They now have an Open Source version in Beta.

My ISP uses Google as their mail service. It seems to work fine with no outages. The spam filter that’s built in seems to work pretty well. It’s automatic filing system (if you want to use it) works fine as does the threading of messages. To read mail and my contacts however, I use Outlook. I know have a back up of all my messages on line which I didn’t have before. The only time I use the Google portion of this is when I’m not near my computer or laptop and want to look at my mail and when I check my spam filter to see what was caught that wasn’t supposed to be stopped.

Trust my confidential email to the Comrade Obama KGB communist vermin at Google?
Thanks, but no thanks!
If you are conservative, you have no business supporting Google in any way.

That’s fine, but you can usually do the same with your ISP (create multiple email accounts) and set rules to filter however you want, Outlook has so many more options than gmail.

Outlook used to be a little on the bloated side but I do not consider it anywhere near bloated status with the last few versions. It’s fast, fairly small footprint and unlimited in its power. It’s actually one of Microsoft’s best products. If you want bloat see Lotus Notes.

gmail is simple to use but lacks the power and depth of Outlook. I also find it faster and easier to do work with Outlook than through the gmail interface - so much so that I pull all my gmail into Outlook.

I assume when someone writes me using a gmail account that it’s spam.

Have always hated Outlook.

Always avoided it as much as possible.

College uses it. Sigh.

Yup.
Outlook’s had that feature for years. Nothing new here. I don’t know what Slate is smoking.

I use Agent as for Newsgroups only. I never considered using it as my email platform. What is good about it?
