Obama seeks assessment on gays in military [McKennedy alert]

No rush to repeal 'don't ask, don't tell'

BY BRYAN BENDER

WASHINGTON - The Obama administration is telling the Pentagon and gay-rights advocates that it will have to study the implications for national security and enlist more support in Congress before trying to overturn the so-called "don't ask, don't tell" law and allow gays to serve openly in the military, according to people involved in the discussions.

They said Obama, who pledged during the campaign to overturn the law, does not want to ask lawmakers to do so until the military has completed a comprehensive assessment of the impact that such a move would have on military discipline. Then, the president hopes to be able to make a case to members of both parties that overturning the 1993 law would be in the best interest of national security.

Obama is hoping to avoid the missteps of the Clinton administration when it tried to open the ranks to gays and lesbians, only to be confronted by fierce resistance from lawmakers and commanders. Early in his presidency, Bill Clinton signed an order allowing gays to serve but was forced to back off. A compromise made it illegal for gays to serve openly, but also restricted investigations into service members' sexual behavior.

Buried deep in the article is *this* interesting snippet:

Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Democrat of Massachusetts and a senior member of the Armed Service Committee, is preparing to introduce legislation to lift the ban, but not until he can get a Republican co-sponsor, according to a congressional aide. The aide said Kennedy's office is lobbying several GOP colleagues to join him, including Senators Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine, John McCain of Arizona, and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania. Some powerful members of his own party also appear unconvinced.

Oh dear.

Obama turns the military into an open showcase for gay “rights”, there will be massive implications, the first and foremost is how it will massively impact the close combat unit.

Let's see McCain's groin leeches try to defend this one.

If McCain signs on to this, I will have to do some prayer of repentence for voting for him.

This has been assessed and reassessed. Libs don’t like the answer so they just keep inquiring until they get a response they like?

Won’t be hard for Kennedy to get in touch with McCain; his number’s on the wall in every Democrat’s bathroom. But Obama will be d@mn annoyed when the ringing of the phone wakes him up, too.

He isn't mentally fit to introduce anything.

I dislike McCain as much as you do, but being lobbied isn’t the same as signing on. For all we know, he’ll tell Kennedy to stuff it on this issue (no pun intended). It won’t surprise me if he signs on, but I don’t know his position on this one way or the other.

All President Orgazma needs to know is that liberals want it badly and that the only part of any issue that’s important to the country now as far as his party is concerned.

His obsession with ‘gay’ issues seems a bit personal to me. Almost like a passion. There are numerous critically important issues facing this country yet he chooses to focus on every angle of this. I genuinely suspect his own sexuality/mentality.

McCain has flipped and compromised on sooo many issues just to stick it in the eye of the GOP. THAt is what he is known for and proud of.

He has been steady on his anti-abortion stance, and thinks that indemnifies him against ALL the other back-stabbing things he's done to conservatism.

That's why I don't care for him.

If the chosen one wants to allow sodomites in the Armed Services, he better be ready to re start the draft. The ranks of all branches of the military will loose tens of thousands of good military men and women. The pure fact that he is even considering this sickens me beyond belief.

The chosen one should know better then to cater to the sodomites. His muzzie faith forbids it. Did you skip over that chapter in your koran Barry Sotero? You are going to really piss off your pals in Iran and Syria.
