Just heard on Fox News that Judd Gregg (R-NH) is nominee for Commerce Sec. That would tip the senate wouoldn't it?
Not only will it tip the Senate, but he’ll do a crappy job.

Don’t know anything about him, but if he accepts, that will tell me all I needed to know.
That’s the whole point. Obama wants to get another (R) out of the senate, knowing that NH’s democrat governor would appoint another Dem. Then, six months from now, he’ll fire Gregg. Gregg’s an idiot and a traitor to his constituents if he takes this.
If he takes it I hope he gets fired right after the democrat appointed to replace him is confirmed.

Judd Gregg Could Be Picked for Commerce as Soon as Monday

An Obama administration official tells ABC News that Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., is now the leading candidate for Commerce Secretary and could be announced as soon as Monday.
Gregg would be at least the third Republican to join the Obama administration, joining the ranks of Transportation Secretary and former GOP congressman Ray LaHood and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. (The political party of National Security Advisor and retired Army General Jim Jones is unclear, though he is a longtime friend of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and appeared at a McCain campaign event.)
Gregg’s announcement, while making the Obama administration more bipartisan, would likely have the opposite effect on the U.S. Senate. New Hampshire’s Democratic governor John Lynch could appoint a Democrat to replace Gregg, thus delivering to Democrats their elusive 60-vote majority, empowering them to stave off Republican filibusters.
Gregg, a former governor, is up for re-election in 2010 in a state that has been trending Democratic for the last few years.

The Sunshine Republicans are going to be the death of the Republic.
Hopefully Gregg won’t take the job unless the NH governor agrees to appoint a Republican. Hopefully.
I’m not sure that the secretary of Commerce is going to be such a great job to have under Obama protectionism. Obama is putting “buy American” restrictions on all companies with US contracts. This is going to trigger huge retaliatory actions around the world, closing export markets to the US. Then, they will blame a Republican.
*** The race to 60: The Judd-Gregg-for-Commerce-Secretary story is very real. Senate Republicans are upset that he hasn’t put the story to bed. So clearly he’s pondering. One sticking point is that New Hampshire has a Dem governor, John Lynch, and that could give Democrats 60 seats if Gregg leaves and Al Franken eventually wins. One idea floating out there is a deal between Obama/Gregg and Lynch to appoint a caretaker Republican (perhaps ex-Sen. Warren Rudman?). Even if he doesn’t take the job, Gregg is certainly sending the signal that he doesn’t want to run in 2010. That is a terrible sign for the Senate GOP. Another retirement makes the idea of netting a single seat in 2010 nearly impossible. Official: Gregg leading candidate for Commerce

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Sen. Judd Gregg of New Hampshire is the leading candidate to become commerce secretary and a decision could come as soon as Monday, an Obama administration official said Saturday.
Gregg’s appointment to the post could give Obama and his Democratic Party a victory in the Senate, clearing the way for them to pass legislation without fear of a Republican filibuster. It also would provide the administration a strong ambassador to the business community in Gregg, who devised the $700 billion banking bailout package last year.
No firm decision had been made, said the administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official wasn’t authorized to discuss administration deliberations. The official also said there was no word on who New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch, a Democrat, would appoint to replace Gregg.
Lynch, a political moderate, could easily appoint a Republican, senior Democrats have told supporters in private conversation. They fret that Lynch is likely to appoint a “placeholder” senator who would not run for re-election in 2010.
Gregg faces a tough re-election in 2010. His state has shifted toward Democrats in recent years and his role in the banking rescue plan would complicate his bid in a state that proudly rebukes government spending and has no state income taxes.

It depends on what the state law says. I remember in Wyoming when Craig Thomas died, the WY gov was a Democrat, but had to appoint a Republican because Thomas was a Republican. The WY state GOP submitted a list of acceptable candidates and the gov picked from that list.
Even if the Gov appoints a Republican, whoever it is will be a FAR weaker candidate than Gregg in 2010. The Dems know this. Even though New Hampshire has been trending blue, Gregg is very popular and would have won re-election in 2010 barring an unforseen circumstance. Any other Republican will have a tough time.
