Barack Obama jumped over a bunch of longer-experienced presidential candidates to win the White House, so will that pattern take at the National Rifle Association? It might, considering rocker and hunter Ted Nugent's popularity among NRA members. We hear that the Nuge is being urged to get into the race, and a key NRA insider tells us: "He does have a grass-roots following." That's for sure. The singer of "Cat Scratch Fever" fame and 23 albums is being promoted on Facebook. While Nugent is an NRA board member, he doesn't have the type of top slot in the organization normally needed to springboard somebody into the presidency. Even Charlton Heston, who played Moses in Hollywood, worked his way up to the presidency.

I had been a NRA member back in the 1970’s. I think I will join again as a family. It’s time.
Nugent is valuable as a recognizable and brash personality who can be outspoken as the voice of the angry ‘regular folks’. In a different time, he may have even been a good choice to head the organization. During the Republican control of Congress and the White House, he could’ve learned on the job while not facing any real legislative or executive order threats.
With the nomination of Eric Holder as AG, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid leading the way in Congress and the slippage of the press from merely partisan into full-on Obama worship - we need someone at the NRA who knows how to lobby, organize and fight in DC. Keep Ted as a high-profile spokesman who can hopefully recruit others to speak out. This is the most threatening environment for the Second Amendment in decades. We need substance more than style or celebrity.
I agree with you. As much as I would enjoy seeing Nugent put a boot in some tail, I don’t believe that’s the best way to play our hand at this time. We (the NRA) need a “insider” who knows the ropes and can get things done. And, before I get pounded on for saying I want an “insider” over Nugent, yes I know that sucks. But given the current danger our 2nd amendment rights face at this time, I think we need to be pragmatic and go with what what will be most effective. We really are in a bad place, it is vital that we use good judgment and not allow our feelings to dictate our actions.
The NRA is in it for themselves, first and foremost.
They are the pimps of gun rights, doing as little as possible.
Most of the pro gun action, law suits have been done by libertarians.
The NRA reminds me of the GOP. “You little people supply the workers, the money, organize at the local level and send the money to us, but don’t come to Washington. You bother us.”
Please.
The ‘ropes’ are keeping and encouraging anti gun legislation so that the donations can come in. How come the libertarians had to bring the anti-gun law suit in DC to the Supremes?
Where was the NRA, except mining more donations, building buildings, staffs and other UNEFFECTIVE pap?
Ted can make the name "Ted" respectable again.
The NRA has an easy pay plan for the Lifetime Membership. $25 down, and $35 per quarter.
Every gun owner should be a member.
Oops. Early typing.
It’s $25 per quarter.
Point taken. To be truthful, I have been somewhat disappointed in the NRA of late. I mean this with no disrespect, but what do you suggest? We are going to be facing a real struggle given the current administration.
I agree with you to a point. Sometimes I’ve felt the NRA had become a huge organization and was easily distracted from the core mission. I think Ted can be the right man to keep the focus in these dire times and raise a stink when needed. I met him once, and he speaks his mind and doesn’t care who he offends.
You can also join the Gun Owners of America(GOA)http://gunowners.org/
They are "Hard Core" Second Amendment activist and have even battled the NRA on some critical legislative issues where the NRA was caving to the political process!
I had let my membership lapse as well until about 10 years ago when Bush Sr. said something particularly stupid about the NRA. That motivated me to re-up.
A word of advice: Don't give the NRA your real phone number.
At the more local level there are numerous state organizations that deserve support and do laudable work as well.
The Massachusetts Gun Owners Action League has been aggressive in making sure local police chiefs comply with concealed carry permitting laws, etc.
I’ll throw out a name, John Stossel. I know, he’s an MSM, but he is persuasive.

The NRA, GOA, etc. will lose if they persist in using inflammatory rhetoric and personal attacks on antigun legislators. Sound constitutional and practical arguments supporting RKBA are what’s needed at this time in our history.
Thanks - I will definitely check them out.
Please do re-join the NRA
This is what happens when people give up their means to resist. When firearms are gone we become slaves, watch this vidio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTq2NEUlhDE
