Tech Notebook: What's that job description again? (Googler gets Obama post)

After months of rumors, we've confirmed that a Googler is getting an Obama administration appointment. Katie Jacobs Stanton, a group product manager who was co-founder of Google's election team and dreamed up the campaign for executives to give employees an hour off to vote in November, is going to Washington as the nation's first ever "director of citizen participation.''

What's that? One hint appears in a missive on the newly revamped Whitehouse.org Web site.

"Citizen participation will be a priority for the administration and the Internet will play an important part in that.'' Among other promises of the new administration is to publish all nonemergency legislation to the Web site for five days and allow the public to review and comment before the president signs it.

...allow the public to review and comment before the president signs it.

A hint of their thinking shows through here - unintentionally I'm sure. It is a common theme in top-down control to get buy-in from the subordinates by making them feel they are part of the process, that they have some input/control over the outcome. This supposedly makes them feel less put-upon by upper management. But it is still a very much top-down control structure, this is merely a PR move.

Note the wording - comment before O signs it. The unintentional slip here is that the intention is obviously O will do whatever he wants, (ie. sign the bill into law) the website is just to make the little people feel good. Elitists, we've got a bunch of elitists in DC that feel the laws (particularly tax laws) don't apply to them, and we're all just little people to be manipulated.

What? You don’t think O would go through 5 or 10 million public comments all by himself before making critical decisions? I want direct participatory democracy! I want our leader to take account of every single bit of input from every citizen!

You are right it is designed to make the little people feel good. But do you think ANYBODY will fall for this? It is such an absurd idea and, besides, it flies completely in the face of a representative republic where we elect representatives to handle issues. The whole thing is offensive.

Oh yeah, I’m sure we can (and will) have fun there. I imagine anyone trying to inject a little constitutionally-correct rather than politically-correct thought into the debate will be shouted down by the O-bots. But it’ll still be fun to make their heads spin around.

I’m sure Ms. Stanton is going to tap her programming buddies back at Google to selectively filter and process the input. The first line of code will send any message with the words “Constitution,” “Liberty,” “Freedom,” “Democracy,” “Limited Government,” “Fiscal Restraint” straight to bit bucket.

Messages with keywords “Command,” “Control,” “Marx,” “Mao,” “Lenin,” “Global Warming,” and “Proletariat” will go straight to the head of the queue.

Gosh, I wonder how Obama’s “miserable failure” problem over at Google got fixed so fast...

I recall thinking the very same thing when Clinton was elected and he placed all those immature cronies in government jobs. Then I was so impressed with the maturity of the Bush teams. Now we are back in the hands of children.

It is so depressing. This clown is projecting incredible weakness around the globe and all of our enemies see it. We are in big trouble.
