Reports Cast Octuplets' Mother in Less-Flattering Light
Fox News ^ | January 30, 2009

Reports are circulating that cast an unflattering light on the miracle mom who gave birth to octuplets in California Monday.

CBS News reported Friday that the mother of eight newborns, who already had six children, filed for bankruptcy and abandoned her home less than two years ago. She hasn't been identified publicly yet, though CBS News described her as a woman in her 30s who lives with her parents.

Britain's Sun newspaper reported that the mother works in a fertility clinic. The grandmother said she had multiple embryos implanted last year and declined to abort any of them.

Gee thanks, you just blew my brilliant theory all to hell. :)

No one ovulates that much without drugs.

So she maybe stole the drugs? And maybe the sperm too?

It’s certainly plausible that she stole the drugs. Even if she hadn’t (reportedly) worked at an IVF clinic, I’m sure she could have bought them online via some Internet pharmacy. And she could have stolen sperm, but hardly needed to — it’s not exactly difficult to obtain without theft. All very bizarre indeed. There’s got to be lots, lots, lots more to the story. It sounds like neither the woman nor her parents are quite sane. Though there are some positive notes there. The gabby neighbors aren’t saying anything about the first six being neglected or abused. And the grandparents and their adult daughter seem to all get along and be supportive of each other. Sort of reminds me of the Munsters . . .

You are more charitable than I am. I guess I am cynical from dealing with certain populations. It is nice of you to give benefit of the doubt.

Another rumor flying around is that she went to Mexico for fertility treatments.

Who knows? Perhaps the real story is that she was stealing fertility drugs from the clinic, and using them without the clinic's knowledge.

I don't think that's the case since her mother claims that she had multiple embryos implanted.

Who knows how accurate those second-hand statements, attributed to her mother and filtered through journalists, are. As a few of us were discussing on another thread, doctors don’t “implant” embryos, they only transfer them — it’s up to the embryo and uterine lining to handle implantation. Doctors just place the embryos in the uterus, mimicking the arrival of embryos into the uterus from the fallopian tubes. Whether a woman just takes fertility drugs followed by natural or artificial insemination, or has IVF, nobody “implants” any embryos. Her mother may be unclear on terminology, or the translating journalists may be unclear and have thus mangled the mother’s statements out of misunderstanding. Her mother may have said “She had fertility treatments, and all 8 embryos implanted”. I can easily see a journalist repeating that as a statement that the woman had embryos implanted, with the implication that they were put into the mother’s uterus by a doctor.

I’d rather err on the charitable side until I know more about the facts of this ultra-bizarre story. And I’ve never heard of any type of “population” inclined toward this sort of family-building program, so I’m not even ready to guess at what sort of “population” they may represent. I’m starting to suspect they’re utterly unique, and that any “population” you or I could think of is reacting to this story with just as much jaw-dropping amazement and perplexment as you and I are.

The only thing that seems totally clear is that this woman and her parents have 14 much-wanted children on their hands, so no matter how much poor judgement may have preceded the children’s arrival, I do hope for a happy outcome. Locking up the apparently loony mom and grandparents and shipping the mega-brood out to foster care would not likely be an improvement over the status quo. However, I certainly hope that the publicity arising from the octuplets will result in some intervention and counseling for all the adults involved, so that 14 will be the final count.

Either way we have a lot more new US citizens who worship fake allah and will scrape the ground 5x per day for him

That doesn’t tell us anything useful. Could be wealthy, poor, US born, not US born, ethnically entirely Turkish or just a drop, practicing Jews, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, atheists, UFO cultists, anything. The family structure being reported (even without the octuplets twist) is not typical of ANY identifiable group of people. Whatever demographic groups they may technically belong to, their lifestyle doesn’t look anything like any of the others members of those groups. I can’t think of any type of person who wouldn’t hear this story and react with something akin to “WTF?!?!?!”.

We have no reason to think these people worship Allah. There are many brands of Islam, but none that endorse single women using medical technology to produce huge numbers of children, while the woman’s parents run themselves into the ground trying to financially and logistically support the giant brood.

An updated CNN article closes with: “The nanny who works with the octuplets’ siblings said Friday that the woman “adores her babies” and is “a perfect mom.””

Curiouser and curiouser. At first glance, this would appear to be a family of absolute whackjobs, but then there are scattered hints here and there that they’re not. My level-headed side thinks the details are really none of my business, but my hyper-inquisitive side is dying to know what on earth the whole story is.

Hmmmm, wonder what her immigration status is?

She’s probably not fretting about not getting her CA income tax return....BECAUSE she didn’t have any taken out.

The reality of this sentence just occurred to me. A nanny? They must have some money. I hope the mother and babies are not on MediCal.

CBS News reported that the woman's father is Iraqi and is heading back to his native country to earn money for the growing family.
