Who knows? Perhaps the real story is that she was stealing fertility drugs from the clinic, and using them without the clinic's knowledge.

I don't think that's the case since her mother claims that she had multiple embryos implanted.

Who knows how accurate those second-hand statements, attributed to her mother and filtered through journalists, are. As a few of us were discussing on another thread, doctors don’t “implant” embryos, they only transfer them — it’s up to the embryo and uterine lining to handle implantation. Doctors just place the embryos in the uterus, mimicking the arrival of embryos into the uterus from the fallopian tubes. Whether a woman just takes fertility drugs followed by natural or artificial insemination, or has IVF, nobody “implants” any embryos. Her mother may be unclear on terminology, or the translating journalists may be unclear and have thus mangled the mother’s statements out of misunderstanding. Her mother may have said “She had fertility treatments, and all 8 embryos implanted”. I can easily see a journalist repeating that as a statement that the woman had embryos implanted, with the implication that they were put into the mother’s uterus by a doctor.
