On any given Sunday, praise the Lord and run the play. (Kurt Warner)

There was Kurt Warner, addressing the godless - notebook-toting cynics who worship at the altar of the free media buffet. Our saviors are sharp-eyed copy editors, and our gods were the Babe and Unitas and Jordan. Who has time for Jesus talk?

Unfortunately, our subject behind the microphone has nothing more important to talk about.

No, it wasn't surprising that it took Warner just a couple of minutes before his talk turned from football to faith. But - and I suspect this was a news conference first - there were no groans from the assembled flock of hacks.

"It makes all the difference in my life," the Arizona Cardinals quarterback says. "Everything I do and everywhere I go, I'm trying to represent Jesus."

You'll have to forgive sportswriters a tad. Most have seen too many athletes espouse their spiritual side yet indulge their criminal. When an athlete mentions God, eyes roll and tape recorders shut off. When thanking Jesus is considered cliche, you know we have problems.

I was engrossed, though. I'm not sure whether it was the message or the messenger, but as I age and as the world around me becomes increasingly unreliable and unpredictable, it's refreshing to see someone who has every reason to get caught up in a peripheral storm of money, ego, celebrity and excess remain so grounded.

From the article:

“Some people get tired of hearing it - ‘How does that relate to football?’ - well, it is who I am, it will always be who I am and it’s the most important thing in my life. So more times than not, it’s going to be the first thing I talk about.”

And when he does talk about it, it’s worth a listen. You don’t have to believe in his God or attend his church. But it’s hard sometimes to find things worth believing in. It’s comforting to hear Warner’s mix of humility and confidence. And it’s oddly reassuring to hear someone in the middle of the hype and the madness that surrounds America’s biggest game remind us all that it is, in fact, just a game.

This Steeler fan thinks alot of Curt Warner as a football player and a person.

We've got a special one in Big Ben as well. He dedicated the AFC Championship to the troops. If you attend the game Sunday I guarantee you'll see Ben and Curt praying together (with a group from each team)either before or after the game.

Good stuff.

Why would jounalists not be interested in what is most important to an athelete.

If Kurt were to say, “body building”, “sex”, “money”, I guarantee they would be intersted.

Those who do not “know” Jesus don’t know Jesus; simple as that.

Curt W... a man I'd love to have as a friend.. Jesus is Eternal, life is temporary... football only has its' season.... why not stick with something that lasts... I would like to see a hard fought game... and may the winner get the spoils...

These sportswriters should remember that, each weekend, there are more people in church than in sports venues.

Given the state of the MSM, they probably could take a cue from the athletes they cover and spend some time on their knees and in the Word.

Yup, unfortunately that means a very different thing to too many players in the NFL. That is their code word for the white powdery stuff that they inhale. We all knew what you meant to type.

A mixture of humility and confidence is characteristic of an authentic Christian like Warner. Humility because he realizes that his own efforts can’t save him; confidence because the God who did save him has promised never to forsake him.

"This is why I always root for Warner."

Then you should be rooting for Troy Polomolu as well. Troy doesn't broadcast his faith at the same volume but believe me the man is deeply committed to Christ.

Troy is also one of my favorites. And I do like what Steelers football is about (hard work, smash mouth, etc.). It did bug me that the Rooneys were so pro-Obama.

I am rooting for the Cards because of Kurt and because of the whole underdog thing.
