SAN JOSE -- About 3,300 staffers who work at 29 daily newspapers in California run by the MediaNews Group must take an unpaid, one-week furlough in February and March as a possible alternative to layoffs, the company said Wednesday.
The move, announced in an e-mail to MediaNews staffers, will affect employees at the Oakland Tribune, Contra Costa Times and San Jose Mercury News, which are among the California papers controlled by Denver-based MediaNews.
Charles Kamen, vice president of human resources for the chain, said MediaNews was following the lead of Gannett Co., which recently told 31,000 employees at 85 daily newspapers and 23 broadcast properties to take a week off without pay.

Good. Next they can stand in a bread line for all I care.
Yeah Im sure after the furloughs newspaper sales should pick up...?
Maybe sales will pick up during the furloughs.
MediaNews Group Inc. said that all nonunion employees at its California newspapers will be required to take one week of unpaid leave to help cut costs amid declining advertising revenue.IOW lowly conservative office workers will pay for the socialist sins of higher paid union journalists and pressmen.
With the economy heading south, we are seeing how wise retailers are using the internet in ways, they could never use fishwraps, tv and even radio to target key customers with specific offers and deals.
My wife is a Talbot customer for over 3 decades. She buys from the local store and from the internet. A couple weeks ago, she got a special email from Talbots. If she brought that email into a store she would get a very nice gift.
We took it into a newer Talbots in eastern Contra Costra county. She was the first one with the EMail. We found out that only certain top customers got the that EMail.
My wife got the nice gift and was one of the first customers to take advantage of a new sale that began that day/weekend. She several hundred $’s of clothes, she needed that were newly on sale or had an extra sales premium.
This pin point advertising works for me as a fly fisher, one son as fly fishing, hunter and boat person and for the other son as a rabid bike rider.
There is no way they can target us via fishwraps, radio or tv.
