The Northern Marianas were captured from the Japanese during World War II. After the war they were a US administered UN Trust Territory. In 1986 they became US Territory at the request of the islanders.

That’s getting somewhat closer to the 1940s.
I’m not all that convinced that we actually wanted them, but that is a hasty comment. Perhaps we did seek them on purpose. It almost seems as if they were abandoned by Spain and we got them almost as an afterthought.

With Formosa/Taiwan, we never asserted any ownership. I guess that’s why I still think his suit is a bit of a stretch.
Tiawan was recognized as a sovereign nation until we opted to recognized the mainland instead. How then could we back the claim it was our territory?
