Russia 'drops missile plans due to Obama change to US attitude'

Russia has dropped plans to install missiles near Poland after the Obama administration signalled a change in US attitude to the region, a Moscow military official has reportedly said.

The official suggested that Mr Obama's White House had made clear it would not prioritise executing the Bush administration's plan to install a missile defence shield in Poland and the Czech Republic.

An unnamed official in the Russian military's general staff said: "The implementation of these plans has been halted in connection with the fact that the new US administration is not rushing through plans to deploy" elements of its missile defence shield in eastern Europe, according to the Interfax news agency.

Vladimir Putin, the Russian Prime Minister, had warned that the US shield - which the Bush White House said was necessary to defend against potential attacks from the Middle East - would be interpreted by Moscow as a direct provocation.

Translation: the price of oil dropped, and we [Russia] can’t afford to do that right now.

Sounds like ‘we can’t afford and don’t need it with clown in power’. The Russian economy is tracking downward steadily. They don’t have to be stronger when their opposition is weaker.

I say BS. They have likely run into other problems with deployment.

Mr Obama's White House had made clear it would not prioritise executing the Bush administration's plan

In other words they have scrapped it without saying so.

Oh Russia will keep working on it.

They will get it in place and then it will be too late for us to implement ours. Present Obama doesn't like stuff that defends freedom anyway, NP.

Like we should trust what Russia says.... I am sure Russia, Iran, North Korea, etc are all singing the same tune with Obama; agree to everything he says; wink, wink, and do just the opposite. Lets wait to see what the dems have say after Iran uncorks its first nuc. They will probably try to blame Bush

Another thing to remember is that there is a REASON that they didn’t want eastern Europe to be able to defend itself from
intimidation and threat of the use of nuclear missiles
from Russia.

That reason is that Russia intends to use
intimidation and threat of the use of nuclear missiles
against Eastern Europe.

Obama backed down, so they don’t need them. America should NEVER back down, and Obama does it as one of his First Acts.

Russia has found it far cheaper to threaten to cut off natural gas to the Europeans than to deploy missiles. Besides, their military isn’t in such great shape. A Russian-speaking friend just got back on Sunday from Moscow and things aren’t so rosey there. Discipline in the military isn’t what it used to be and the death of several prominent human rights activists and anti-corruption journalists has people wondering about the future.

His wife and two daughters went back for three months early last year but couldn’t take the lack of security and corruption that was rampant in Moscow. His daughters were scared of almost all the men there because they would just stare at the girls (cute blue-eyed blonde 11 year-old twins). Gee, these guys sound like our own “disadvantaged yutes.” The mentality of these predators seems to be reflected in their foreign policy.
