President Obama wants a fresh approach to toppling Robert Mugabe and is discussing with aides an unprecedented, US-led diplomatic push to get tough new UN sanctions imposed against the Zimbabwe regime, The Times has learned.
During talks Mr Obama has had with his top Africa advisers in recent weeks, the central idea they focused on was taking the issue of Zimbabwe before the UN Security Council, but for the first time to combine such a move with an intense diplomatic effort to persuade Russia and China not to block the initiative.

If so, he must now think differently...perhaps due to a different outlook or new data.
If Obama succeeds in removing Mugabe five minutes sooner than he otherwise would have remained in office, I’ll give him a tip of my cap. The man is an absolute blight on the African continent, he must be removed.
Obama campaigned for his cousin, Odinga...but I don’t recall him campaigning for Mugabe.
Maybe we can boycott the Zimbabwe Olympics.
When have tough UN sactions ever worked?
Obama wants to topple Mugabe?
Hmm, I guess he doesn’t like competition... ;^)
Wasn’t Mugabe legally elected according to Jimmy Carter?
What about Bin Laden? He hasn’t even captured Bin Laden yet?
I wonder just what he thinks he can give away to make them cooperate.
This crap isn't as easy as it looks, is it WonderBoy?
Let’s play pick a dictator! Georgie, you go first...Whack! Nice work, Dubya. That one actually needed killing very badly. Now you, Barry-—ooh, that Iranian one is too hard for you, and you might have better traction against an African. Yes, you can hit Mugabe, yes you can! And just think of all the employment you will whip up in America!
The snake and the dragon will make quick work of Zero. There's nothing in it for them to make Zero look good.
Sanctions? What can sanctions do to Zimbabweans, that Robert Mugabe hasn’t already done, and long ago?
Will Dear Leader also issue a stern warning?
Obama could give away the UN. I would support that.
Mugabe would have been gone long ago if the props had been kicked out from under him.
Maybe Cousin Raila Odinga could help.
why doesn’t he ask Odinga to cap Mugabe
Zimbabwe doesnt have enough muslim influence yet, anyway
Coud be win-win

This “issue” has the articulate but incompetent Susan Rice’s fingerprints all over it
look for US combat troops to become meals-on-wheels to a Black African country in the next couple of years, so Bambi has his very own war legacy
Do nothing for 20 years and then claim victory in ridding the beast about five minutes before he dies a natural death deserves praise?
If he can pull this one off, I’ll give him props. Mugabe is already ripe for the toppling so one extra push and he’ll probably go. So Obama is smart as
- this is relatively low-hanging fruit.
- really needs doing as Mugabe does need to go.
UN Sanctions....hmmm....
follow the money trail, this time through Zimbabwe
