New York City fears return to 1970s

While many U.S. cities worry that their economies are deteriorating to the level of the 1930s Great Depression, New York City fears reliving a more recent decade that features strongly in city lore.

The 1970s were a low point in city history as a fiscal crisis almost pushed it into bankruptcy, crime rates soared, and homeless people crowded sidewalks as public services crumbled.

Almost a million people fled New York's Mean Streets during the decade for the safer, more stable suburbs, a population decline that took more than 20 years to reverse.

When discussing the current crisis, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, now seeking a third term, promises that he will not allow the city to return to the darkness of those days, although he stresses that it faces "giant financial problems."

"I know some are concerned that city services will erode," he recently told reporters. "Let me remind you that the city went down that road in the 1970s ... I can just tell you that we are not going to make that mistake again."

“I lived there in the 70’s. Yup, the Democrats ran it right into the ground.

Only good thing was the disco scene, and the pizza.”

You forgot the Ramones and the Bronx Zoo(Yankees of the late 70’s)..

I recall the newspaper strike. Instead of people supporting the workers they gave life to local newspapers such as Newsday and the Village Voice.

NY is ready for the Anti Nowhere League to open up CBGB’s again. Or similar. I have stuff from Max’s Kansas City too. The Tuff Darts need to come back in some form. It’s time for real punk bands again. Red shoelaces and all:)

Orange Julis,Robert Hall,Castro Convertibles,Roasted Chestnuts,$2.99 Steak and Radio City, that was the NY I loved.
Can’t overlook Canal Street, a teenage gadget freak’s heaven.

Almost all that was gone, when I lived there off and on in the middle 70’s.

How many stories in the Naked City, I forget?

I had a bi-level haircut which became a mohawk with enough sweat and scheiss spray

Of course, the style has been around since the 1960s but now it's erroneously called a mullet and mocked endlessly.

"I wish David Patterson would allow open season for hunters on hipsters, bad pizza,...

I learned how to make a pizza from Italian guys when I grew up there. From kneading the dough by hand, to rolling it later. The sauce had to taste just right. 75% of one cheese and 25% of another cheese. Toss some fresh ground oregano on it after the cheese and sprinkle a dash of olive oil around. (other things can be put on top of it.)

Then use the shovel to put it in the big oven. Rotate every 10 minutes. All those pleasurable tastes mix together. When the perimeter rises enough, it's done!

Try it at home with all the basic ingredients you need starting with flour. If it's too much, look for an Italian place with a big oven!

"There are Eight Million stories in the Naked City...this has been one of them."

Klein's On The Square, Mays on 14th Street, Ripley's Believe it or Not (all on Union Square).

Macy's, Gimbels and A&S all in the same block.

The Central Park Zoo for free. The Playboy Club and its weak imitation The Gaslight Club. Central Park when you could play sandlot and pick-up football without getting a ticket.

Black and White shakes or Nedicks in the paper cup in the metal base from the hotdog stands actually on the subway platforms....

I saw Death Wish and Saturday Night fever as a double feature. My mom was with me and she covered my eyes through both movies, I was 12.
