GALVESTON, Texas – A slain toddler tried to stop her mother and stepfather from beating her to death by reaching out to her mother and saying, "I love you," a prosecutor told jurors Tuesday. The pleas from 2-year-old Riley Ann Sawyers didn't stop her mother, Kimberly Trenor, from continuing to brutalize her, assistant district attorney Kayla Allen said in her opening statement at Trenor's murder trial.

Oh why are adults so cruel to children? This breaks my heart! Why don’t the parents give up their children before beating them to death? Why? Why? Why?? I wonder how this woman would feel if someone was to beat her? Some people can’t see farther than their nose and stupid “need” for another person of the opposite sex! URRRRRRRRRRGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Texas law presents this requirement as something that capital murder juries must answer, with the jury's answer determining whether the defendant receives a death sentence or life imprisonment. It seems... irregular to treat it like this, where the defendants beat a beautiful child to death. It doesn't take much imagination to see what could easily happen if another child were born to this woman.
Capital murder is an appropriate charge when the victim is age six or younger. This story sounds like a smokescreen to obscure some horse-trading by the prosecutor. If so, just admit it, don't try to hide it with stupid-sounding excuses.
Who testified/witnessed the child saying “I love you,” or is this a prosecutor using emotionalism to win a case?
Manners are one of the easiest things to teach a child. You need only use manners yourself and your children will emulate you. If you want them to use manners at all times, use your manners at all times.
