The first captain called the room to attention. After introducing the superintendent, he announced, Ladies and gentlemen, the 43rd president of the United States! The auditorium filled with a deafening applause, much louder than the rather tepid response to the speech he had just concluded.
The president quickly motioned for us to sit down. His demeanor was far different than the one Id seen on camera hundreds of times before this man clearly was not comfortable being a politician. Far from the stiff that hed always been when reporters were around, he seemed relaxed, excited, almost like a kid on Christmas.
The next two hours were inspiring, amazing, and ultimately very revealing about who the commander-in-chief really was and what he really believed....

***I learned all I need to know about Bush and the military that time he made the surprise Thanksgiving trip to Iraq. What a rush.***
Yep, and the Big 0 went to Iraq and snubbed the military when he was campaigning. He probably knew that the military wouldn’t vote for him, so he went and worked out at the gym where he could impress some stupid, young voters with his skinny body.
***Do not attempt to present truth to the Bushbots as it is a complete waste of time. It is similar to presenting truth to a leftist. They never will accept that Bush was a big spender, that he failed on immigration, on Iraq, and on the economy. They approve of his socialist bailout. Consequently they never understand why Bushs most recent approval ratings are only in the high twenty percent range.***
Slight correction needed here:
Do not attempt to present truth to BushHaters as it is a complete waste of time. snip/ They never will accept that Bush failed to veto bills when the liberals had enough people in Congress to override his vetoes for half of Bush’s tenure. Consequently, they refuse to accept that the liberal polls were constantly skewed against Bush.
W = Man's man
Clinton = Pussy
Obama = Sissy
Give it a rest.
W? Weak on immigration over the last seven years? That W?
Nope, not me.
I don't remember W ever providing an explanation or even outlining his philosophy as such. Never a direct statement of his position. I was hoping that it might have been included in this exposition of essence of the man.
Very well stated.
Ok - you ARE right! Sorry for the goof... I still think it was an awesome thing for George to do. What a memory that cadet has!

Nice article.
Thanks for the ping!
I understand all that. But what I’m talking about here is managing perceptions, and Pres. Bush did a lousy job of that.

BINGO
No problem. It's just that some of us USAFA guys get picky when it comes to USAFA vs. USMA vs. USNA. Service rivalries remain strong, long after graduation (even though we're on the same side.)
I agree that it was a great thing for President Bush to do. That grad has many fond memories.
Let’s at least get some pertinent facts straight. First, Bush didn’t veto a single bill for his first six years in office. All six of those years the GOP controlled the House and four of those years they controlled the Senate. Second, even after the 2006 elections, there was not enough liberals in Congress to override a Bush veto, which would require a 2/3 vote.
FACT CHECK:
1.) President Bush’s most recent JA ratings were in the 30th percentile range (per Gallup, Rasmussen, CNN, and ABC/Washington Post) which means the President’s JA ratings were actually in the low 40s when one adjusts the results for ‘sampling’ bias.
2.) According to the Battleground Poll, President Bush’s PERSONAL APPROVAL ratings never dropped below approximately 60% (Clinton’s never got above 40%).
3.) Let me do a quick edit of one of your more absurd comments: “They never will accept that Reagan was a big spender (historic deficits), that he failed on immigration (signed an amnesty bill), on Iran-Contra/Lebanon/Terrorism, and on the economy (2 recessions during 8 years).” Yea I know, my edited statement is perfectly absurd, as was yours!
24/7/365....for 8 years?
If you know....please, please, apply for a job as a Republican Campaign manager, or for work in a Reps office, for the RNC, maybe a Rightwing think tank and PR org, or even as a journalist for a publication on the Right.
Seriously, your expertise is sorely needed.
It was frustrating to me he was so different. He doesn't grope for words off camera, for one thing!
