US will lead on climate change - Obama

US President Barack Obama has vowed to lead the world on climate change as he set about shredding Bush administration global warming policies with new domestic measures designed to force the development of fuel-efficient cars.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton meanwhile picked a veteran of the Kyoto Protocol talks as her envoy for climate change, as the administration sent clear signals as world leaders target a historic global warming pact this year.
"We will make it clear to the world that America is ready to lead," Mr Obama said, in an apparent swipe at former president George W. Bush's reluctance to take control of international efforts to combat climate change.
"To protect our climate and our collective security, we must call together a truly global coalition," the president said, just six days after his inauguration, in a ceremony in the East Room of the White House.
Mr Obama signed memoranda designed to prod the struggling US auto industry to design new fuel-efficient vehicles to lessen US dependence on energy sources which he said bankroll dictators, and to spur the US economy.
"The days of Washington dragging its heels are over," Mr Obama said.
"My administration will not deny facts - we will be guided by them," Mr Obama said, in an apparent dig at Bush aides accused of subverting science for ideological reasons.

Q&A
With his 90th birthday in July, a trip into space scheduled for later in the year and a new book out next month, 2009 promises to be an exciting time for James Lovelock. (the originator of the Gaia theory, which describes Earth as a self-regulating planet)
Q: Do we have time to .. save ourselves from climate change?
A: Not a hope in hell. Most of the “green” stuff is verging on a gigantic scam. Carbon trading, with its huge government subsidies, is just what finance and industry wanted. It’s not going to do a damn thing about climate change, but it’ll make a lot of money for a lot of people and postpone the moment of reckoning. I am not against renewable energy, but to spoil all the decent countryside in the UK with wind farms is driving me mad. It’s absolutely unnecessary, and it takes 2500 square kilometres to produce a gigawatt - that’s an awful lot of countryside.
Q: What about work to sequester carbon dioxide?
A: That is a waste of time. It’s a crazy idea - and dangerous. It would take so long and use so much energy that it will not be done.

I don't even know where to start with this.
A republican candidate running on conservative priciples who could articulate himself would have beat Obama. Out of all the republicans we got McCain? Palin did a better job than McCain.
My administration will not deny facts...
But it will feel free to invent them.”
He started his entire campaign denying the fact that he was born in Kenya......
How will anything change or improve now??

The only way we will ever get a conservative presidential canidate is to change the primary system. We need to schedule the primaries in the order of the states with the largest percentage of votes for the the Republican in the last election i.e. Oklahoma and Texas would go before IA and NH.
Modified to correctly read:
“My administration will deny facts - we will NOT be guided by them,”
Isn’t that the truth.
What killed me, was when people I respected fell in line behind McCain. Not here, but the political figures I had respected. Sometimes you just have to hang your head and be ashamed of your party.
“His socialist/commie agenda is on steroids.”
We knew this was coming. Coming fast it is.

Unless the fact is.....
.....About Ayers and his connections to Obama.
.....We really don't know everything about climate change and the fact remains that man is most likely not the cause.
.....Hansen is a scientific fraud pushing an agenda.
.....Abortion is really killing a helpless baby.
.....There is no oil supply crisis, only a developed oil field and refinery capacity crisis.
.....There is enough coal in the USA to last 500 years.
.....We need many more nuclear plants.
.....Wind and Solar are NOT up to the task of meeting our energy needs and will not be anytime soon.
.....The renewable energy plan will require us to increase the number of wires criss crossing the landscape by orders of magnitude.
.....The renewable energy plan is not even close to being cost effective and will require many many times the land of conventional energy sources.
.....The mortgage default crisis is largely a RAT created crisis with the minority loan policies.
.....The USA actually has won in Iraq and made the world safer, and the RATS will probably squander that victory and lose it after all.
.....Iraq was a central part of the WOT.
.....His plan for the USA is socialism with central control of everyone's life, diet, recreation, finances, retirement, education, and .......
I think there are quite a few facts that Obama's Administration will deny.
That’s about it huh.
Global warming on Free Republic
Unfortunately, even if the US generated all domestic energy from nukes and other sources (including coal!) there would still be that little issue of fuel for airplanes, buses, cars and the TRUCKS that form the circulatory system of our economy and society. I’ve seen designs for semis that are incredibly aerodynamic but I get the feeling the trucker culture would resist taking to these changes (too sleek lol) very rapidly.
Also, petrochemicals are probably the foundation of our modern way of life, as they are the basis of plastics and all sorts of other industrial and agricultural applications.
If WE got off oil, that simply means that particular supply of product would go to some other country without the money or technology to go nuclear or incorporate increased hybridization into its developing economy.
I agree with you on changing the primaries for the republican party.
But what do you think the chances of that happening are? It’s like being the fan of a team with an AWFUL or choking coach or quarterback. You may not know the outcome of changing these positions but you know there is no way it could be any worse and it’s so magnified by the fact of its prominence.
I sometimes wonder if the party’s leadership is invested in a shell game rather than in truly promoting the principles they claim to hold.
The FIRST thing that should have happened after the loss (still time I guess) is to change the primary system RADICALLY.
I understand having a longer contest so that a candidate ‘proves’ himself on a starter-campaign trail but there’s no way it should start in Iowa or have anything to do with New Hampshire, a state which is now reliably liberal anyway.
And close off the damn primaries, there’s no reason for Democrats or independents to vote in the GOP primary except for them to pull their own Operation Chaos on the GOP, which I’d argue has been done far more than the reverse.
