Google's rumored "GDrive," a service that would enable users to access their PCs from any Internet connection, could kill off the desktop computer, The Guardian has reported.
The GDrive, unconfirmed by Google, is reported to launch this year, with tech news sites calling it the "most anticipated Google product so far."
The Google drive would shift away from Microsoft Window's operating system, in favor of "cloud computing," where storage and processing is done in data centers. Users would no longer have to rely on their computers' powerful hard drives.
Home and businesses have been turning toward web-based services, such as e-mail including popular services Hotmail and Gmail and photo storage, such as Flickr and Picasa. Users would no longer have to worry about their hard drives crashing, since data would be saved on the Web, and can be accessed from any machine.

When you can buy a terabyte of storage (external hard drive) for under $150 there is no need for this “service”.
I hate thin clients and I know I’d hat this.
Apple’s iDisk has always been reliable for me.
I ditched Google ages ago when they were in bed with the Chi-coms and started censoring YouTube.

I’d put a hat on it and call it a ball player.. you hear me
Thin client network device...hmmmm...where have I heard that one before? Oh, yeah, that failed Oracle/Sun effort.
People want physical control over their files, their property. Few will ever give some company all their stuff.
While the concept isn’t ridiculous, it isn’t going to replace the self-contained desktop unit for the foreseeable future.
It is a good way to share files with others on the net, however.
A Bob and Tom fan?
Even more-so, its going to be a long time until a company such as Google can let you boot a hard-diskless computer from only their network in an acceptable amount of time. This article and the memes it promotes are pure crap.
Anyone seen the netbooks lately with Intel Atom processors?
I saw one this weekend with 1GB of memory, a 16GB SSD drive, and an atom processor for $399 at Best Buy.
Right next to it, was a full sized laptop for about 50 bucks more.
Seriously, who is falling for this?
No way, No how.
They can have my PC and my laptop when they pry them from my cold dead fingers, LOL.
So, how does the G-Drive connect to WiFi? G-Spot?
Well now you have done it. Your post about reloading ammo will be saved on Free Republic servers forever.
How would us men be able to get online then?
So, when I lose my Internet connection, I lose access to all of my files and programs? Pass.
Them's my sentiments, too.
Planning to go buy an iPhone this very day to go with my two Dell Dimensions and my MacBook Pro.
Yes. He even began a company that offered that. It closed after 2 years, or so.
I believe that in an office environment there will be an increase in networking to the main server, and less devices/files/folders on the local computers. But not for home use. There are far too many home users around the world and laptop owners who do not want financial docs, personal files and work projects to reside on remote servers. Besides, we've come a long way to beef-up processor speeds. Does anyone think that Intel and all the other processor companies will suddenly slash their customer base? Hardly. And any dramatic move towards networking with the host machine and/or remote server storage for millions of people is a long reach, and in my opinion, a failed concept for widespread use from its inception.
