Armed forces exceed recruiting goals

Syd Richardson always knew she'd join the military.

After exploring her options, learning about all of the service branches and talking to friends who are serving, the 17-year-old Norwin High School senior enlisted in the Army National Guard.

A $20,000 signing bonus helped her to make a decision.

"I signed up because I wanted to serve, but I'm really glad I did it because I won't have to worry about money," said Richardson, who leaves Aug. 31 to begin basic training in Jackson, S.C. "I'm guaranteed a job. It's something to fall back on."

Newly released figures suggest that events in recent months might help active duty and reserve military recruiters: President Obama has promised to bring Americans home from Iraq within 16 months, the nation is in a recession and college loans are drying up.

Indeed, the proof is in the numbers.

The Department of Defense said each of the nation's active duty and reserve forces met or surpassed recruitment goals in fiscal year 2008, something that has not happened since 2004, the first full year of combat in Iraq.

"Many people join because they have a sense of service to a nation that is at war. But, no doubt about it, the benefits are important," said Jack Harrison, public affairs director for the National Guard Bureau.

"Maybe the economy is tipping the balance."

From what I've heard, the average score on the Army ASVAB is between 31 and 49.

so far everyone on here is wrong. for the ARMY the nat'l average is 31. anything 50 or above and you are considered, what we call an ALPHA. which is good because it means you will have more options available to you. the only reason you would have to score a 50 or above to be qualified is if you have a GED.
the marines and navy are a little different, they dont use the same scores we do and therefore require a 35 minimum. i dont know their policies on GED's. i suggest you find out what each branch can offer you and go with the one you feel would best serve your needs based on all available information.

I got a 99 three months ago. I think that a 100 is impossible?

One tip —deliberately screw up the computer “practice questions” that preceed each section.

Sounds crazy, huh?

They count the computer “practice questions”.

There are lots of pretty good recruits available among the GED’s because a lot of the home-schooled kids have to go the GED route. At the time my son graduated home school, Air Force (his first choice) would not accept GEDs, so he went Army, scored very high, and went into 97C.
