What’s left of St. Bernadette’s face fits neatly into Father Terry McCloskey’s palm. The Redemptorist Church priest keeps the piece of stone — about a three-pound chunk from the ruined statue — handy at the parish office. It’s a visual aide to the extent of damage done by vandals last weekend to a lovely grotto. At least the broken stone shows some of the physical damage. What McCloskey can’t capture is the hurt his parishioners are feeling. Probably Saturday night, some fool or fools nearly busted off the head of St. Bernadette’s statue on the grounds of Redemptorist Parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. He, she or they also attacked the plaster relief inside the place of prayer, smashing Christ’s head and a portion of the Virgin Mary. The image of St. John was caved in, leaving a gaping hole.

Aren’t they though? Think it’s because we don’t do anything about those kinds of people anymore and that’s why they are more and more brazen? No law. No order = Chaos. All I can say is I am glad I am NOT those responsible because one day they WILL receive their just rewards and it ain’t gonna be pretty.

Reading through the comments, I saw one that said the pastor was practically asking the congregation to vote Republican in the last election. I’m guessing this is because of the relative positions of McCain and Obama on abortion. Is it possible that this isn’t merely an act of random violence, but in fact retribution for going against ‘The One’?

Apparently, whoever did this thought they hadn’t caused enough initial damage. Someone returned, maybe Monday night, and spray painted a yellow “A” in a circle on the grotto.

The same marking was put on one of the horses of the Pioneer Mother Memorial statue in nearby Penn Valley Park. Parks department maintenance staff power blasted the marking Wednesday morning, and also removed the words “Stop the killing GENOCIDE,” which had been spray painted onto the statue’s base.

I think if they are caught...they should be made to work outside churches for 6 mos...(maybe a year even depending on the amount of damage done) cleaning the statues, washing the windows, cutting the grass and so on.
