As a native Louisianian and now living in Georgia, I have never felt any states were truly south except the Deep South, Old South, however you want to say it. Unless you were from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, or Georgia, you were a Yankee to me!
No relevance to article really, I am just sayin :)

To foreigners, everyone in the US is a Yankee
To those in the Deep South, everyone outside it is a Yankee
To people of the old Confederacy everyone in the old Union is a Yankee
To people in the old Union west of the Appalachians, everyone east of the Appalachians is a Yankee
To people east of the Appalachians, everyone north of Maryland is a Yankee
The the people north of Maryland, everyone in New England is a Yankee
To the people of New England, it refers to the people of the hill towns in the interior New England
To the people of the hill towns in interior New England it refers to the people the hill towns in Vermont
To the people of the hill towns in Vermont it refers to other people of hill towns in Vermont who still use an outhouse.
The only thing clear about the definition of Yankee is that NOBODY wants to be one.
