Jan. 24 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama, seeking to sell his stimulus package to the public, promoted plans to build up clean-energy industries, expand health-insurance coverage and boost security at U.S. ports as part of the broader effort to jump-start the sputtering U.S. economy.
If we do not act boldly and swiftly, a bad situation could become dramatically worse, Obama said today in his first weekly radio and video address as president.
The administration released a report today outlining some of Obamas priorities for the two-year recovery package. They include loan guarantees and other support to open up credit for renewable-energy investors, providing health insurance coverage to almost 8.5 million people whove lost jobs and enhancing security at 90 ports.
The president is trying to keep up momentum for his plan to boost the economy so that he can sign legislation by mid- February. House Democrats already have begun work on an $825 billion package of spending and tax cuts and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said she will bring the package to the House by Jan. 28. The Senate released portions of its proposal yesterday.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and other Republican congressional leaders, while expressing disagreement with some of the details, said yesterday they expect to reach an agreement on the legislation by the deadline Obama has set.

Stimulus -- a rat's rear. What a crock. And where are the Repubs? Oh, yes, under the Dems desk with their knee pads on.
Useless proposal, only economic propaganda window dressing.
I agree. Perhaps what we need is the equivalent of an environmental impact statement prepared by a neutral company to let all parties know the true impact of proposed actions. Call it the Economic Impact Study. And in the meantime, we should be able to put a stop to such actions in the same way that various environmental groups can obtain restraining orders. Or is our physical environment more important than our economic environment? (Not that they can be separated, actually.) Quick actions almost always backfire.
It’s worse than a sham. He’s going to impose massive tax increases on individuals and businesses to ‘go green.’ Additionally, he only wants to automate health records in order to centralize and concentrate government control on personal information and behavior. He’s going to own the banks (and the financial info they maintain on us), health data, other tracking of personal behavior (via his tech czar), and more. It’s not difficult to see where this is headed.
If "renewable energy" were a money maker, there would be no need to provide government loan guarantees.
These are bad loans and a big mistake.

...are there any small government, free market conservatives left in the senate????....
If “renewable energy” were a money maker, there would be no need to provide government loan guarantees.

Worse than that. These is no renewable energy, other than nuclear if you will, that has any practical value. So he is throwing money at nothing -— just in hopes that something might pop up. Ha. This is a move to pander to the “greenies” to keep the HUGE amounts of campaign cash coming his way.
Nothing more. The money should be invested in building nuclear plants and in expanded piping and drilling technology and actual drilling that will ACTUALLY RESULT IN A REDUCED DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN PETROLEUM. But that is not what this is about -— in spite of the lies and sham.
The left has demonized the anti-abortion movement as an attempt to meddle in a woman's personal affairs when in fact the issue also involves an innocent life.
Contrast that with the REAL MEDDLING in personal affairs the national healthcare and green movements plan to employ under the premise that my health habits are a national emergency or my carbon footprint will kill people (or the planet).
Washington Spending your past, present and future money!
” If we do not act boldly and swiftly, a bad situation could become dramatically worse, Obama said today in his first weekly radio and video address as president. Obama stressed that hes seeking long-term economic growth (by creating government jobs) with the spending portion of his plan and not just a quick boost to create jobs.
Why do they think the economy can hold on for another two years while they set up a Super-socialist state????
In "normal times" we could probably weather these "stimulus packages".
But the annual budget deficit will continue to get larger. One reason being the focus of the "stimulus" is on non-producing things like the "green energy" category. The other reason being that the government taking money away from the economy to give back to the economy does not produce wealth and growth.
I agree about nuclear power, but that will not happen. The greens are so invested against nuclear power they couldn't change their minds.
"The economy is not going to improve because of this plan. You dont solve economic problems by printing money. You solve those problems by working hard, saving, producing, and the exact opposite of what we are trying to do.."
"One way the government could create affordable housing is to stop propping them up with very low interest rates."
"The government can't fix the economy, it can only move our property from person to person, by taxing, borrowing, or printing more currency."
"The total cost to society is what the government spends, not just what we see it tax us"
"If devaluing currency made countries richer, the third world nations could just print themselves to a world power"
"We don't want work for the sake of work. We want work for what it produces"
"The (US Treasury)bond market is the next to collapse. The current buyers are like condo flippers looking to sell to someone else". "It's just another ponzi scheme as each buyer buys to sell until there are no buyers and it collapses""(because the government can never pay it back)

The volume of the slag that comes off is about a quarter to a tenth of the volume of the original trash, and it may be mined for various metallic content, as it is a higher grade of ore than is most of the material that is hauled up out of the ground by various mining operations all over the world. It may be hot-formed into building blocks, and depending on how it is cooled (rapid quench or slow radiant cooling), it forms various grades of igneous stone. Or it may be crushed as aggregate for concrete or for road building purposes.
The temperature of the plasma torch is about 30,000˚ F., about three times the temperature of the sun's surface. The syngas generated is about 2,200˚ F., and is passed over a heat exchanger to generate superheated steam, in the process of cooling it. Once cooled, the stream of hydrogen and carbon monoxide may be separated, yielding up pure hydrogen which may be used to power a fuel cell, or burned directly in the presence of oxygen to yield a very hot flame, which may be used to further produce power through the medium of superheated steam. Carbon monoxide itself is an excellent fuel which when combined with oxygen, forms carbon dioxide, a safe, NON-POLLUTING fraction of our atmosphere, and one that is vital for the photosynthesis of oxygen and carbohydrates in green growing plants. The carbon dioxide may also be captured, cooled and compressed into either liquid CO2, or allowed to become "dry ice", an intensely cold and solid form of CO2, and an important industrial product.
The hydrogen, of course, when combined with oxygen, becomes water vapor.
Empty out our land fills and turn those blighted acres back into "greenfields", divert all the existing and continuing waste stream into electric power, reduce need for and dependence on fossil fuels, assure a continuous supply of building materials that will prove to be the equal of our current supplies, and provide a way of reclaiming metallic elements otherwise lost when merely dumped in a hole in the ground.
I don't see a downside. Most elegant solution.
It has been estimated that perhaps few than a dozen of these processing units could both clean up all the existing waste dumps, and the current waste stream, for a municipality the size of New York City, and generate enough electricity to keep it lit and industry-capable, without tapping into outside sources.
There is a place to spend the funds for infrastructure that does NOT have to be only for the roads and bridges. This is infrastructure that actually IMPROVES our environment. And generates a number of useful by-products, not the least of which is relatively cheap electric power.
And carbon-neutral to boot. NO fossil fuels are used once the cycle is started.
